Autumn Dult with Sunday opening hours in the oldest city between the Danube and the Alps
The Kirchweihdult Freising is one of Upper Bavaria's traditional Dults and the counterpart to the spring Palmdult in the same city. Both Dults date back to Freising's market tradition as a centuries-old episcopal city – Freising, with its Domberg, is one of the oldest cities between the Danube and the Alps and was made a bishopric by Boniface in 739. The Dults were originally parish fair markets that attracted farmers and craftsmen from the surrounding area to the episcopal residential city every year.
The venue is Marienplatz – Freising's central square with the Mariensäule – as well as the adjacent streets of the city center. For three days, there will be stalls offering household goods, pottery, clothing, sweets, and regional specialties. Food stalls offer classic Dult cuisine: pretzels, grilled fish on a stick, roast chicken, gingerbread, and candied almonds, and mulled wine as soon as the October evenings get cool.
The highlight is the Sunday opening hours on the middle day of the Dult: Almost all shops in Freising's city center are open from 1 PM to 6 PM. Aktive City Freising e.V., the city's city management association, coordinates the offerings with numerous activities, demonstrations, and special offers. The Dult thus seamlessly transitions into a shopping day – a concept that revitalizes the city center and supports local retail.
Freising, with around 50,000 inhabitants, is the district capital of the Freising district and is home to the famous Hofbräu of the World Heritage brewery Weihenstephan – the oldest brewery in the world on the Weihenstephaner Berg. The city is located directly north of Munich Airport and is connected to Munich via the S-Bahn line S1. The Kirchweihdult is part of a rich festival calendar – alongside the Palmdult, Volksfest, and Christmas market – and offers a relaxed transition from late summer to early autumn in the mild October.
The 2026 edition is confirmed in the official event outlook of Aktive City Freising e.V. Three days of stalls offering pottery, household goods, clothing, sweets, and food will characterize Marienplatz and the adjacent streets.
On Sunday, October 11th, the city center shops will combine their special offers with demonstrations and activities directly in front of their stores – the Dult flows into a full shopping Sunday. Aktive City Freising e.V. points out that event planning can lead to short-term changes; current program details will be published in early October.
