Spring Volksfest on the Blobach — Kick-off to the Mühlhausen festival season
The Mühlhausen Spring Festival is one of the most traditional Volksfeste in Northern Thuringia. The venue is the Blobach — the historic festival grounds outside Mühlhausen's city walls. Family and children's carousels, shooting galleries, showmen with rides for all ages, and regional gastronomy characterize the multi-day event. The Traditionsverein Mühlhäuser Heimatfeste e.V. (Mühlhausen Traditional Festivals Association) organizes the festival as part of the city's annual local and traditional festival program.
The 2026 opening will take place on Easter Saturday, April 4th, at 4:00 PM — accompanied by the Mühlhausen town horn players, one of the oldest musical traditions of the Free Imperial City. Afterwards, the showmen will open their stalls and rides. The festival runs daily until April 12th, with extended opening hours until 11 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.
Starting Thursday, April 2nd, the Easter Market opens on the Untermarkt in Mühlhausen's city center — with over 40 craft stalls, Easter decorations, and regional specialties. The market serves as a prelude and accompanying event to the Spring Festival, bringing together regional direct marketers and artisans.
A special feature of Mühlhausen is the "Golden Egg": a scavenger hunt through the city center and surrounding districts, where hidden eggs are sought. Those who find one receive free ride tickets for the Spring Festival's showman stalls. This activity is particularly aimed at families and school classes.
The city of Mühlhausen/Thuringia is located in the Unstrut-Hainich district in the north of the state of Thuringia. It is one of Germany's oldest Free Imperial Cities — its almost completely preserved medieval city wall is two kilometers long and ranks among the most important fortifications of its time. Mühlhausen is also the city of Johann Sebastian Bach (organist 1707–1708) and Thomas Müntzer (Peasants' War leader 1525) — both legacies are thematized in the city's annual local and traditional festival program.
The Mühlhausen Spring Festival 2026 runs from Easter Saturday, April 4th to Sunday, April 12th, 2026 — eight days of festival centered around the traditional festival hub, the Blobach. The festival opens on Saturday, April 4th, at 4:00 PM by the City of Mühlhausen — accompanied by the traditional town horn players.
On the fairground, you'll find thrilling rides and family carousels, shooting galleries, prize stalls, and a wide array of showmen. Regional specialties — Mühlhausen bratwurst, grilled fish on a stick, potato pancakes, cotton candy, gingerbread — are served at the stalls. Starting Thursday, April 2nd, the Easter Market on the Untermarkt features over 40 craft stalls.
