Open-air cinema on a giant airscreen in front of the castle backdrop
When the castle facade is illuminated and the Auenpark is bathed in summer evening atmosphere, the Sommernachtskino am Neuhäuser Schloss opens its tenth screen – the only one under the open sky. Pollux by Cineplex Paderborn operates a permanent multiplex cinema in the city; for one week in August, it expands into the open-air park.
Schloss Neuhaus is one of the most important Weser Renaissance buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia. Built at the end of the 16th century as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn, it stands today on an island between the Lippe, Alme, and Pader rivers. The surrounding Schloss- und Auenpark was created in 1994 for the State Garden Show and has since been the city's most popular park – ideal for open-air events.
Pollux relies on an inflatable airscreen – a giant projection screen several meters high that remains stable even in light winds. Sound quality is ensured by several distributed loudspeakers, and seating consists of a mix of classic folding chairs and lounge chair areas. Blankets and warm clothing are recommended – even in August, it can get cool in the Auenpark in the evenings.
The program focuses on entertaining mainstream highlights from the past 12 months, supplemented by the occasional arthouse film. The exact film selection for 2026 will be published on the Cineplex website a few weeks before the start. Experience shows that popular summer cinema classics, new comedies, family films, and at least one preview screening are usually included.
Schloss Neuhaus has been a district of Paderborn (approx. 152,000 inhabitants) since 1975.
