23rd edition of the atmospheric Christmas market in the courtyards of the Weser Renaissance castle
For over two decades, Hämelschenburg Castle has invited visitors to its Christmas market during the pre-Christmas season. The event, which began in 2004, has evolved from a small courtyard market into one of the region's most renowned Christmas markets. The selection of exhibitors is strictly curated—only craftspeople with demonstrably handmade products are granted a stall. This consistent focus on quality distinguishes the market from many commercial large-scale events.
The Renaissance castle was built between 1588 and 1613 and is considered one of the most important examples of the Weser Renaissance style. The symmetrical layout with ornate sandstone facades, representative bay windows, and an extensive castle garden provides a unique stage. During the Christmas market, the courtyards are filled with stalls, the paths are festively illuminated, and the rooms are accessible. Heavy curtains, candles, and fir branches transform the castle into a scene from times gone by.
The approximately 70 exhibitors each bring their own specialty. Potters from the Wesertal valley, glassblowers from the Bavarian Forest, jewelry artists from Hanover, woodturners from the Harz Mountains, felt artists from Schleswig-Holstein, leather artisans from Northern Germany—the selection is regionally rooted and balanced across the country. Glass Christmas baubles, wooden nativity figures, felt angels, carved smoker figures, and lovingly sewn Advent calendars are among the particularly sought-after gift ideas.
The catering adheres to the market's high quality standards. Mulled wine (Glühwein) is served in handmade mugs (with a deposit), Feuerzangenbowle is ignited according to the original recipe, stollen comes from regional bakeries, and gingerbread from traditional bakeries. Savory options like game bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen) with apple sauce, homemade bread, cheese variations, or mushroom pan complement the sweet classics.
On the three market days, choirs, brass choirs, string ensembles, and solo artists provide the musical backdrop. Classical Christmas carols, Renaissance music, and contemplative acoustic sets combine with the historic ambiance to create a consistently atmospheric experience. The complete music program will be announced by the castle in November 2026.
The exhibitor list and music program will be published by Hämelschenburg Castle in November 2026. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years.
