One of the oldest brewing towns in the world celebrates
Freising is one of the oldest brewing towns in the world – Weihenstephan Hill is home to the Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, the oldest brewery in the world. On the "Tag des Bieres", the beer and university town celebrates this tradition: together with the Gräfliches Hofbrauhaus Freising and the Weihenstephan student fraternities, Marienplatz is transformed into a stage for Franconian-Bavarian brewing culture.
Commemoration of the Purity Law
The "Tag des Bieres" is celebrated around April 23rd – in commemoration of the enactment of the Bavarian Purity Law in 1516, which stipulates that beer may only be brewed with water, hops, and malt. The program includes a parade, the reading of the charter by a herald on horseback, as well as live music and games.
Brewing culture to experience
Additionally, guided tours are offered tracing the steps of old Freising breweries, recalling the town's once-great density of breweries. The "Tag des Bieres" makes Freising's brewing history directly tangible for visitors.
