The grand Upper Bavarian Volksfest in the cathedral city
Freising, a large district town in the district of the same name north of Munich, is known as a cathedral city and university location. Its annual social highlight in late summer is the Freisinger Volksfest – a classic Upper Bavarian Volksfest with a festival tent, beer, and tradition, attracting around 220,000 visitors each year.
On the festival grounds, a large festival tent with a festival host, a beer garden, a wine hall, and the night café provide the atmosphere for ten days. Amusement rides, stalls, and games complement the program and make the festival an experience for all generations.
With around 220,000 guests, the Freisinger Volksfest is one of the largest Volksfests in the Munich surrounding area. The traditional parade, the sporting supporting program, and the close connection to the region's brewing and beer culture – Freising is home to Weihenstephan, the world's oldest existing brewery – make the festival an identity-defining event for the Upper Bavarian cathedral city and the entire Freising district.
The 2026 edition of the Freisinger Volksfest runs from Friday, September 4th, to Sunday, September 13th, 2026, on the festival grounds. Around 220,000 visitors celebrate for ten days in the large festival tent with daily live music, in the beer garden, the wine hall, and the night café. On the opening day, a traditional Volksfest parade proceeds from Marienplatz to the festival grounds. Concerts, races, and the Volksfestkriterium (cycling race) in the city center complement the ten-day program.
Admission to the Volksfest grounds is free. Costs are incurred for rides, food, and drinks.
