20th edition — the largest non-commercial children's festival in Central Germany at Schlosspark Moritzburg
On International Children's Day on June 1st, the expansive Schlosspark Moritzburg in Zeitz is transformed into the largest non-commercial children's festival in Central Germany. In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 20th edition. What began in 2007 as a small municipal family festival is now a mammoth event with over 60 participants and thousands of visitors from the entire Burgenlandkreis and far beyond.
The Schlosspark of the Baroque Moritzburg complex in Zeitz, with its vast lawns, the Johannisteich pond, and its shady avenues, is an ideal venue. Program items are spread across the entire area: circus performances with acrobatics and clowning, nature experience stations with animals and plants, creative activities with crafting, painting, and making, magic shows for various age groups, and a central stage at the Johannisteich for the larger program items.
This year's motto puts music at the center: "Ready, Set, Play the Music". Music workshops for children, an instrument petting zoo with hands-on stations, communal singing, drumming, and sound walks through the park are offered. The motto is not chosen superficially — the city of Zeitz has been investing in musical education for children and young people for years, and the children's festival makes this focus visible for the entire region once a year.
Zeitz is located in the southern Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt, on the White Elster river, roughly between Leipzig and Jena. The city looks back on over a thousand years of history: episcopal seat, capital of the Reformation, later an industrial center, and undergoing structural change since reunification. Moritzburg Castle with its park and castle church forms the cultural heart of the city. Visitors to the children's festival should combine the day with a walk through the old town or a visit to the castle church.
