Three-day town festival in the Elbe-Havel region with Sandau clubs and showmen
Sandau (Elbe) is one of the smallest towns in Saxony-Anhalt: around 1,000 inhabitants, located on the eastern bank of the Elbe in the Stendal district. What defines the town are its old town rights (Hanseatic town with over 800 years of history), its central location on the Elbe river, and an unusually active club scene. It is precisely these clubs — marksmen, fire brigade, sports association, cultural clubs — that are the main actors of the Volks- und Vereinsfest, which takes place annually in June.
The venue is the Sandauer Stadtpark — a park-like area on the outskirts of town with a festival meadow and stage. Over three days, market stalls, showmen with small rides, food stalls run by local clubs, a stage for live music and dance evenings, and children's areas are set up here. The atmosphere is family-friendly, and the goal is clear: a community celebrating itself, without any tourist pressure.
Sandau belongs to the Elbe-Havel region — a landscape characterized by two large rivers, vast meadows, and many small Hanseatic towns (Havelberg, Werben, Tangermünde). The area is developed for tourism but by no means overcrowded: cyclists on the Elbe Cycle Route, hikers in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, and water sports enthusiasts shape the scenery. Visitors to the club festival can combine their weekend with a bike tour along the Elbe or a boat trip.
What makes the Sandau club festival special is the fact that it is entirely supported by the local club scene. Every club has its own stall, and every club contributes to the program — from the marksmen's shooting competition to the choir's performance. This form of 'village egoism' is meant in a positive sense: it shows what a community can achieve on its own, without professional event agencies taking charge.
