Open-air cinema evenings in the Weyersberg schoolyard — lovingly crafted by the Burbach Cultural Association
The Burbach district is part of the Saarbrücken regional association and has been a neighborhood in constant change since the structural transformation of the Saar coal mines. It was here, in 2011, that the Kulturverein Burbach e.V. was founded to strengthen the cultural self-confidence of Saarbrücken's westernmost district through exhibitions, events, and neighborhood projects. The summer cinema has long since become the summer highlight for the entire neighborhood.
Forget air-conditioned multiplex halls: here you sit on benches or your own blanket in the middle of the asphalted schoolyard, with the houses of Burbach behind you, and a screen in front of you that only comes to life at dusk. The atmosphere is familiar, many guests know each other, and the film selection traditionally oscillates between arthouse gems, classics, and socially relevant documentaries — far from the big blockbuster circuit.
Schoolyard of the Offene Ganztagsgrundschule Weyersberg, Große Weyersbergstraße 7, 66115 Saarbrücken-Burbach. The entrance is directly at the school building; parking spaces are scarce in the neighborhood — we recommend arriving by bus or Saarbahn (Burbach Rathaus stop). In case of rain, a substitute date or a covered area will be arranged; current information will be available at short notice on the association's Facebook page.
The event is managed on a voluntary basis by the board of the Cultural Association. Drinks, snacks, and small contributions go directly back into the association's cultural work — which also operates Saarbrücken's westernmost exhibition space for contemporary art. So, by visiting the summer cinema, you are also supporting Burbach's other neighborhood culture.
For families with children, students, neighbors from Burbach, Malstatt, and Alt-Saarbrücken — and for anyone who prefers a charming, very Saarlandic alternative to traditional cinema operations on a mild summer night. Combine the film evening with a walk along the Saar river or a drink at St. Johanner Markt, and your Saarbrücken summer evening is perfect.
In 2026, the Kulturverein Burbach once again invites you to the summer open-air cinema evening in the Weyersberg schoolyard. As in previous years, the focus will be on atmosphere, neighborhood connection, and a carefully curated film program — from arthouse and current documentaries to timeless classics.
Admission remains traditionally donation-based, and drinks and small snacks are available on-site. Blankets, folding chairs, and good spirits are explicitly welcome.
The 2026 program will likely be published in July on kulturverein-burbach.de and on the association's Facebook page.
Traditional format of past editions:
Free admission, donations are welcome and directly support the association's cultural work.
Take the Saarbahn S1 to the Burbach Rathaus stop, then walk for about 5 minutes. By car, take the A620 (exit Saarbrücken-Burbach); parking in the neighborhood is limited.
Traditionally donation-based. Blankets and folding chairs are allowed. Food and drinks are offered on-site.
Open Air — in case of rain, check the Cultural Association's Facebook page beforehand for postponement or cancellation.
Saarbrücken offers a wide range of hotels in the city center (Mövenpick, Leonardo, Victors). For an authentic stay, look for guesthouses in the Burbach district or neighboring St. Arnual.
