The traditional Oktoberfest of Saarland on the Saarterrassen fairground
The Saarbrücker Oktoberkirmes is the largest autumn fair (Volksfest) in Saarland and is considered the Saarland answer to the Munich Oktoberfest. For ten days, the Saarterrassen fairground in Burbach – a district in western Saarbrücken on the banks of the Saar – transforms into a fairground landscape with over 45 stalls and rides.
With 20,000 m², the Saarterrassen fairground is one of the largest fairgrounds in Southwest Germany. It is located directly on the Saar river, opposite the Ostspange, and is easily accessible via the "Saarterrassen" light rail stop and Burbach train station. Six Saarbahn lines and numerous bus routes connect the fairground to the entire city.
The 2026 offerings include classic and modern rides: bumper cars, Polyp rides, trampolines ("Olympia"), high-thrill rides ("Tropical Trip", "Beach Polyp"), skill games ("Crazy Frog Hammerspiel", "Diamanteninsel"), and a children's area ("Märchenland", "Convoy Star", children's bumper cars, children's flyers). In addition, there are food stalls with classic fairground fare and a large beer garden featuring breweries from Saarland and Bavarian festival beers.
The Oktoberkirmes is traditionally opened on Friday at 6:30 PM with the barrel tapping ceremony by the Lord Mayor of Saarbrücken. The opening is musically accompanied by the Musikzug Dudweiler 1968 e. V. Afterwards, 10 days of full operation are scheduled.
With around 180,000 inhabitants, Saarbrücken is the state capital of Saarland and the economic, political, and cultural center of the region. Its location directly on the French border (Forbach 5 km) and its connection to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg make the Oktoberkirmes a cross-border attraction – many visitors come from neighboring Lorraine.
The fair opens on Friday, September 26, 2026, at 6:30 PM with the traditional barrel tapping ceremony, accompanied musically by the Musikzug Dudweiler 1968 e. V. The organizer is the state capital Saarbrücken.

Train: Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof (main station), then take the Saarbahn (line 1 or 2, "Saarterrassen" stop). Car: A620 exit Saarbrücken-Burbach. From France via the A4/E50.
