'For Faith, Custom, Homeland' — over 375 years of shooting tradition in northern Cologne
The St. Sebastianus-Schützenbruderschaft Köln-Dünnwald was founded around 1648 – making it one of the oldest shooting fraternities in the Rhineland. Its motto 'Für Glaube, Sitte, Heimat' (For Faith, Custom, Homeland) combines Catholic tradition, village identity, and club life. Dünnwald, now a district in northern Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine, has retained its village character despite being incorporated into the big city – the Schützenfest is as much a part of the annual cycle as Carnival is to central Cologne.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Friday, August 14th to Saturday, August 22nd. It begins with the bird shooting on Thursday, August 14th – traditionally the sporting highlight, where a wooden king bird is shot at with wooden bolts, and the 'king shot' determines the new king for the coming year. On Friday, August 15th (Assumption of Mary, a public holiday in parts of Germany), the Grand Parade through Dünnwald follows: uniformed marksmen, standard bearers, music corps, guest clubs, dignitaries – a colorful procession along the main streets. Saturday, August 16th features the guild and neighborhood shooting competition: competitions among the individual shooting groups and neighborhood districts. On Saturday, August 22nd, the Coronation Ball in the Josef-Barten-Halle crowns the festival week – with dancing, gala uniforms, and a musical program.
Like many Rhenish shooting fraternities, the Dünnwald fraternity maintains close ties with the Catholic Church: the church service at the beginning of the festival week, the patronage of St. Sebastian (martyr and patron saint of shooters), prayers, and remembrance of deceased brethren are integral parts. The Schützenfest is therefore not just a folk festival – it is part of a Christian-bourgeois social fabric.
Cologne-Dünnwald is located in the Mülheim district, on the northeastern city border with the Bergisches Land (state of North Rhine-Westphalia). With its wildlife park, Mauspfad (mouse trail), and recreational areas in the Wahner Heide, the district has a special character between big city and nature. The festival grounds and the Josef-Barten-Halle form the center of the shooting fraternity's activities – the hall serves as an event space year-round, and during the Schützenfest, it is decorated with coats of arms, sashes, and flags.
The shooting fraternity tradition is as vibrant in western North Rhine-Westphalia as in no other German region; in the districts of Mettmann, Rhein-Erft-Kreis, and Cologne alone, there are dozens of historical fraternities. What makes Dünnwald outstanding is the combination of 375 years of tradition with a festival format that also engages younger generations – through the king couple, the junior king shooting, and a deliberately family-friendly stage program.
S-Bahn S 11 from Cologne Central Station to Cologne-Dünnwald, then a 10-minute walk to Dünnwalder Mauspfad. By car: A3 exit Cologne-Mülheim, then follow signs for Dünnwald. Parking available around the festival grounds.
