348 Years of Marksmen's Tradition
The St. Johannes Marksmen's Brotherhood Altenberge looks back on an exceptionally long history: founded in 1677, it is one of the oldest marksmen's brotherhoods in the Münsterland. For over 348 years, the brotherhood has maintained the marksmen's tradition in the Münsterland municipality of Altenberge (Steinfurt district), north of Münster. The patron is John the Baptist, whose feast day on June 24th traditionally determines the date for the Schützenfest in many Catholic Münsterland brotherhoods. In Altenberge, the festival takes place on the first July weekend — immediately after St. John's Day.
Gooiker Platz Festival Grounds
The venue is the festival grounds behind the multi-purpose hall at Gooiker Platz. This is where the festival tent is erected, where the royal balls and festive balls take place, where the companies assemble, and where the parade starts and ends on Sunday. The festival tent can accommodate several hundred marksmen and guests — it's not a mass event, but a full-fledged Münsterland tradition.
Four Days of Schützenfest
The program follows the classic Münsterland schedule: Friday: Assembly of the companies, Grand Tattoo, opening of the festival tent. Saturday: Bird shooting at the shooting range, crowning of the new marksmen's king, royal ball in the evening with gala uniform. Sunday: Schützenfest mass in St. Johannes Baptist parish church, followed by a grand parade through Altenberge, morning pint, festive ball in the evening. Monday: Marksmen's breakfast and conclusion of the festival.
St. Johannes — The Parish Patron
The St. Johannes Baptist church in the center of Altenberge gives its name to the marksmen's brotherhood. The Sunday mass for the Schützenfest is well attended — marksmen in full uniform, families in festive attire, brass bands playing marching music. The connection between the church and the marksmen's tradition is strong in the Münsterland and shapes the identity of the brotherhood. After the mass, the parade forms and proceeds through the streets of Altenberge to the festival grounds.
Altenberge in the Steinfurt District
Altenberge is a municipality in the Münsterland region with around 11,000 inhabitants, about 15 km north of Münster. The region is predominantly agricultural, with a dense network of clubs and a strong sense of tradition. There are several marksmen's brotherhoods in the town (Entrup, Grinkenschmidter); the St. Johannes Brotherhood is the one in the main town. The Schützenfest is a community event that brings many former Altenberge residents back home from all over the Münsterland.
