Shooting tradition in Altenberge, Münsterland — June 19th to 21st, 2026
The Schützenfest in Entrup is a traditional village shooting festival, organized by the Entruper Schützenverein (Entrup Shooting Association). It takes place annually on the third weekend in June — in 2026, this means from Friday, June 19th to Sunday, June 21st. The venue is the Schützenplatz Entrup, Entrup 51, located between the roundabout and the train station of Altenberge in the southern Münsterland region.
Throughout the festival, catering, live music, and a varied entertainment program ensure a great atmosphere.
Altenberge is a municipality with just under 11,000 inhabitants in the Steinfurt district, northwest of Münster. Characterized by the Münsterland landscape with forests, heathlands, and small farmsteads, Entrup is one of these farmsteads within the municipality. Shooting traditions are a particularly dense custom in Münsterland — almost every farmstead has its own association. The Entrup festival stands in this tradition and is an anchor of village life.
Bird shooting is the classic form of the king's shoot in Münsterland and Westphalia: Shooters fire air rifles or crossbows at a wooden bird mounted on a tall bird pole. Whoever shoots down the last splinter becomes King. It is a ritualized act, as sporty and exciting as it is traditional and symbolic.
Classic Münsterland Schützenfest by the Entrup Shooting Association. Three days of festival tent with catering, live music, and a communal program. The highlight is the traditional bird shooting on Saturday, where the new shooting king is determined.
Throughout all days: Catering in the festival tent, music, convivial atmosphere. Detailed program: schuetzenverein-entrup.de.
Admission to the festival tent is mostly free or for a small fee. King's Ball requires admission. Food and drinks at usual Schützenfest prices.
By car: Take the A1 motorway, exit Münster-Nord, then follow the B54 towards Altenberge, then to Schützenplatz Entrup. By train: Altenberge (Münsterland S-Bahn) station, then walk or take local transport to Entrup.
Admission to the festival tent is usually free or for a small fee; the King's Ball requires an entrance fee. Current prices can be found at the Entrup Shooting Association (schuetzenverein-entrup.de).
The program is classically Münsterland-style — if you want to experience a real village Schützenfest, this is the place to be. Festive attire is recommended on Sunday.
