Few events have as magical an effect in Helmstedt as the Open-Air Cinema on the market square. When the sun disappears behind the Helmstedt rooftops, the screen lights up, and the first image flickers across the square, the city center transforms into a grand cinema hall under the starry sky.

The Setting

For centuries, Helmstedt's market square has been the social center of the city. The late Gothic Town Hall, St. Stephen's Church, the burgher houses, and the Juleum towering in the background form a backdrop that no indoor cinema can replace. Sitting here, you don't just watch the film; you experience the city's history.

Program and Film Selection

helmstedt aktuell Stadtmarketing compiles the program in coordination with film distributors. Usually, one to three films are shown on consecutive evenings—audience hits from the current cinema year as well as timeless classics. Catering

The surrounding cafés, restaurants, and food stalls are open before and during the screenings. Picnic baskets are explicitly welcome. On warmer evenings, a visit to the beer garden before the screening is recommended.

The Open-Air Cinema is an initiative of the Stadtmarketing and is financed by sponsorships and municipal support. Admission is free for all visitors. A voluntary contribution to the donation box or purchases from gastronomic partners helps to keep the event alive.
