19th Medieval Market and Jousting Tournament at Easter in the Renaissance Citadel Spandau
The Spandau Citadel, one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance fortresses (construction began in 1559), transforms into the stage for a grand medieval spectacle over the Easter weekend. The Easter Knight Festival, in its 19th edition from April 4th to 6th, 2026 (Saturday to Easter Monday), combines jousting tournaments on horseback, combat displays, historical music, and a large medieval market on the ramparts, in the inner courtyard, and in front of the Julius Tower – a format that attracts tens of thousands of visitors from Berlin and Brandenburg annually.
Around the stages, Berlin's largest medieval market at Easter unfolds – with craftspeople demonstrating blacksmithing, leatherworking, felting, woodturning, and jewelry making live. Medieval clothing, traditional costumes, books, mead, honey wine, and hearty market food are sold. For children, there's a wooden carousel, a Ferris wheel, juggling workshops, and hands-on activity stations. Fully armored knights and ladies in complete historical attire receive free admission – an incentive for reenactors and LARP groups from across the entire northern German region.
The festival ticket includes admission to the permanent exhibitions at the Citadel (except the bat cellar) – including "Revealed. Berlin and Its Monuments" and the Spandau City History Museum. This is a rare opportunity to combine a visit to a Berlin Renaissance fortress, a medieval event, and a museum with a single ticket.
The Spandau Citadel is located in the Haselhorst district (Spandau borough), surrounded by the Havel River at its confluence with the Spree. It is directly accessible via the subway line U7 (terminus Rathaus Spandau or Zitadelle) and is easily reachable for day visitors from all over Berlin. Organizer Carnica Spectaculi produces historical festivals throughout Germany and has been responsible for the Easter and Pentecost Knight Festivals in Spandau since 2008.
From April 4th to 6th, 2026, the Spandau Citadel will transform into a medieval fortress village for the 19th time. Organizer Carnica Spectaculi brings around 40–60 craftspeople, combat groups, and music ensembles to the ramparts and inner courtyard for each edition. The highlight of the daily program is the jousting tournament on horseback, staged by the show group Heimdalls Erben as a play about the "Liberation of the Citadel" – at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The day's finale is the spectacular fire riding show at 6:45 PM.
Visit to the permanent exhibitions at the Citadel (except bat cellar) included in the ticket.
