Münsterland Whitsun Schützenfest with Bird Shooting and Festival Parade
When the Whitsun weekend arrives, the most important time of the year begins for the Grinkenschmidt Marksmen's Club. The traditional Schützenfest runs from May 23rd to 26th, 2026, over the Whitsun weekend, bringing four days of tradition, music, and conviviality to Altenberge in the northern Münsterland. The venue is the Waltrup Schützenplatz, Hohenhorst 6.
The festivities kick off with a reception for the king at the club house and the muster call. The club's brass band provides the musical opening. The first dance evening starts in the marquee in the evening — exuberant atmosphere with a regional dance band.
Whitsun Sunday is dedicated to the grand festival parade. The marksmen gather at the club house, march through Altenberge with brass bands and flag delegations before returning to the Schützenplatz for a lunch break. The afternoon features a family program and public entertainment, followed by a dance evening and King's Ball in the marquee.
The highlight of the festival: the bird shooting. The marksmen line up to shoot the wooden bird off the pole — whoever makes the decisive shot becomes the new Schützenkönig (King). This is followed by the proclamation of the king, crowning, and oath. A festival parade with the new royal couple, a reception in the marquee, and the King's Ball.
The final day includes a children's program at the Schützenplatz and, in the evening, a convivial winding down in the marquee — the traditional "Ausklang" with club members and guests.
The Grinkenschmidt Marksmen's Club is an association that has grown over decades in Altenberge. Like many Münsterland marksmen's clubs, it preserves the Schützen tradition as a mix of village community, religious tradition (often anchored at Whitsun), and a social gathering place. The festival parade, bird shooting, and King's Ball form the three pillars of the festival — without major modernization efforts, but with all the more authenticity.
The municipality of Altenberge is located in the Steinfurt district (North Rhine-Westphalia), northwest of Münster. With around 10,000 inhabitants, it is a typical Münsterland small town with a rural-Catholic cultural character. The marksmen's tradition plays a central social role here — as it does everywhere in the Münsterland. Whitsun in Altenberge means: Schützenfest.
The 2026 Whitsun Schützenfest starts on Saturday evening with the muster call and the first dance evening. Whitsun Sunday features the grand festival parade, Whit Monday the bird shooting with king's proclamation, and Tuesday the winding down. Organizer: Grinkenschmidt Marksmen's Club Altenberge.
Admission to parade and bird shooting is free. Dance evenings in the marquee with daily admission fee.
By car: A1 exit Lengerich or B54 from Münster. Parking available at the Schützenplatz and in surrounding residential areas. Bus connections via routes from Münster.
Admission to the festival parade and bird shooting is free. Dance evenings in the marquee with daily admission fee. Food stalls and drinks at daily prices.
Whit Monday morning for the bird shooting and the king's proclamation is atmospherically the highlight. Sunday's festival parade from the morning onwards is very photogenic.
