Over five weeks of Christmas market with Penny-farthing and children's carousel at the Old Town Hall
The market square around the Old Town Hall and the two-towered St. John's Church is one of the most beautiful inner-city squares in Lower Saxony. The late Gothic town hall with its representative facade, the 14th-century St. John's Church, and the famous Gänseliesel fountain in front of it form a backdrop that gives the Christmas market its special atmosphere. The historic city center with its half-timbered houses and narrow alleys completes the picture.
With a duration of over five weeks, the Göttingen Christmas Market is one of the longest Christmas markets in Lower Saxony. The opening on November 23, one week before the first Advent Sunday, and the closing only on December 29 after the Christmas holidays give the market an exceptionally long window of time. This makes the market suitable for visits at different times during the pre-Christmas period and the Christmas holidays.
Over sixty stalls offer a wide range of products. Classic Christmas market gastronomy is at the forefront: mulled wine in various variations, Feuerzangenbowle, candied almonds, potato pancakes, Schmalzkuchen, gingerbread, stollen, bratwurst, and crepes. In addition, craftspeople present their work – wood products, ceramics, jewelry, candles, wool products, and Christmas decorations. The range is a mix of traditional market goods and selected handcrafted items.
A special feature of Göttingen is the historic Penny-farthing – a classic high-wheel bicycle with the typical unequal front and rear wheels. This collector's item is exhibited during the market period and is a popular photo opportunity, especially for families with children. It represents the nostalgic atmosphere that distinguishes the Göttingen Christmas Market from interchangeable big-city markets.
A classic children's carousel in the market square attracts the youngest visitors. This clearly positions the market as a family-friendly event. While parents and grandparents browse the stalls, children find entertainment in a central location.
The market is closed from December 24 to 26. The organizer thus respects the Christmas Eve tradition and the Christmas holidays. From December 27 to 29, the market reopens for the days between Christmas and New Year's, when many Göttingen residents and guests take the opportunity for a relaxed market visit.
For over five weeks, Göttingen's historic market square is transformed into a festive market mile. The spatial arrangement around the two-towered St. John's Church and the late Gothic Old Town Hall gives the market its special backdrop. Over sixty stalls offer a diverse range of products, from classic market gastronomy to high-quality handicrafts.
The combination of tradition and tourist attraction makes the Göttingen Christmas Market a fixed date in the pre-Christmas season of Southern Lower Saxony. The nostalgic elements such as the historic Penny-farthing and the classic children's carousel shape the atmosphere and distinguish the market from interchangeable big-city markets.
