Decentralized art mile in the shop windows of over 30 businesses in Weitlingkiez Lichtenberg — from September 13 to October 11, 2026
The Weitlingkiez is a neighborhood in the district of Lichtenberg (Lichtenberg borough), named after Weitlingstraße. The area around the S-Bahn station Lichtenberg is characterized by Wilhelminian-era apartment buildings, small retail businesses, and an active neighborhood structure — a Berlin micro-culture that was consciously activated in the 2010s through district coordination and neighborhood management. The Kunstmeile is the curated response of the district coordination to the question of how art and neighborhood identity can be intertwined — without gallery walls, without admission fees, with local businesses as exhibition partners.
The festival operates spatially in the exact opposite way to classical art fairs: instead of concentrating artists in one hall, the Kunstmeile distributes the works throughout the entire neighborhood. Around 30 shops and institutions provide their shop windows, walls, and rooms — bakeries, pharmacies, cafés, hairdressers, bookstores, practices, the Weit.Blick neighborhood center. One to two artists are curatorially assigned per location. Visitors receive a map and can visit all locations on a walk through the neighborhood — a mix of art, urban exploration, and encounters with local business owners.
The 13th edition in 2026 runs for four weeks, from September 13 to October 11. Opening festival on Sunday, September 13, starting at 5 PM in the community room of the Weit.Blick neighborhood center. Every Saturday during the festival period at 11 AM, a guided art tour starts at Münsterlandplatz. Exhibitions include painting, photography, ceramics, textile art, and other techniques; the profile is open and includes both professional and ambitious hobby artists from the neighborhood and the wider Berlin scene.
The organizer is the Stadtteilkoordination Lichtenberg Mitte, a structure for neighborhood development supported by the district office. The Kunstmeile is financed primarily by district funding and the volunteer work of people from the neighborhood. Applications for exhibitors are accepted via kunstmeileweitlingkiez.de and kunstmeile.lichtenberg(at)gmail.com.
