Christmas market on the 1st Advent around Lichtenberg Town Hall
The Lichtenberger Lichtermarkt is one of Berlin's oldest district Christmas markets: 2025 marked the 30th edition. Organized by the Lichtenberg District Office, the market takes place around the town hall at Möllendorffstraße 6 in the Lichtenberg district (Bezirk Lichtenberg) – an impressive brick building from the 1890s with a spacious forecourt, which transforms into a market mile on Advent Sunday.
What distinguishes the Lichtermarkt from Berlin's large commercial markets is its organizational profile: the stalls are primarily run by charitable associations, schools, kindergartens, and initiatives from the Lichtenberg district. The proceeds go to the association's work, a children's project, or local social initiatives. The range of goods reflects this: homemade baked goods, sewn items, crafts from school workshops and social organizations.
A highlight of the day is the traditional auction – the district office auctions off lost property or unclaimed items, which draws large crowds every year. School choirs, brass bands, and local talents take turns on the stage. The district mayor traditionally opens the market at 1 p.m.
Admission to the market is free. As the town hall is located in a densely populated residential area and the forecourt is closed for the market, the district office strongly recommends arriving by S-Bahn (S Lichtenberg) or tram. The market ends in the early evening – those who wish to extend their day can then move on to one of the many Lichtenberg restaurants.
The 31st edition follows the established format: opening in the afternoon by the district mayor, continuous market operation until 6 PM, a stage program with local choirs and music groups, auction of lost property, and food and drinks at the association stalls. The exact stall composition for 2026 depends on registrations; the district office usually publishes the registration deadline in late summer.
A special feature compared to large Berlin markets: the proceeds from many stalls directly support district association and school projects – drinking mulled wine here also helps support a children's daycare or a sports club in Lichtenberg.
