Wine-hiking festival with 6 wineries along the Affenschaukel vineyard path below the Kleine Kalmit
The Ilbesheim Kalmitfest is a wine-hiking festival where six vintners serve their wines along the distinctive "Affenschaukel" vineyard path. On Saturday, July 25, 2026 (from 2 p.m.) and Sunday, July 26, 2026 (from 12 p.m.), the stations are spread out below the Kleine Kalmit – a striking elevation with a wide view over the Rhine plain.
The "Affenschaukel" vineyard path owes its curious name to the striking vineyards that hang in steep terraces on the slope – "like on a monkey swing," as the Palatinate people used to describe it. During the festival, the path becomes a culinary hike: visitors walk with a glass and tasting card from winery to winery, taste the wines directly from the vine, and take in the view over the Southern Wine Route.
The format focuses on six Ilbesheim vintners, each managing a station along the Affenschaukel vineyard path. This limited number makes the festival manageable and intimate – visitors can take their time, chat with the vintners, and taste their wines in peace. Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, cuvées, and sparkling wines are on the menu.
The Kleine Kalmit (271 m) is a prominent elevation in the Southern Palatinate wine-growing region, southwest of Landau. From the summit and the surrounding slopes, one has a far-reaching view over the Rhine plain, the Vosges mountains, and – in clear weather – the Black Forest. The Affenschaukel vineyard path runs along the slope of the Kalmit and combines steep vineyards with the expansive view.
The Kalmitfest is not a classic wine festival with a central festival site, but a wine-hiking festival along a marked path. Visitors start at the edge of Ilbesheim, walk along the vineyard path, taste at the six stations, and return to the starting point at the end of the path. The format combines enjoyment, exercise, and a landscape experience.
At the stations, the vintners serve small Palatinate dishes: Flammkuchen, bruschetta, cheese and sausage platters, pretzels. The atmosphere is summery and relaxed, with a predominantly wine-loving audience. Those lucky with the weather can experience the sunset over the Rhine plain with a glass of Riesling in hand.
