Traditional brewery festival of the private brewery Ayinger — for over 50 years
The private brewery Ayinger (founded in 1878) is one of the best-known private breweries in Upper Bavaria. In the beer village of Aying in the Munich district (state of Bavaria, 09184), southeast of Munich, it brews specialties such as Ayinger Jahrhundert-Bier, Celebrator (Doppelbock), and Bräu-Weisse, which have won international awards. The Bräu-Kirta is the brewery's annual home game celebration, with which the village celebrates its brewery identity.
For over 50 years, the Bräu-Kirta has taken place on the second weekend in October — as a Bavarian answer to the Munich Oktoberfest, but in a much more intimate and authentic atmosphere. The festival tent at the Maypole in the center of Aying is the scene of celebrations for five days, with classic Bavarian brass band music, Tanzlmusi, and band performances.
The trademark of the Ayinger Bräu-Kirta is the traditional ox race on Saturday afternoon. Oxen from Walpertskirchen compete against each other on a race track, the audience can place bets, and the award ceremony is one of the most humorous festival events in Upper Bavaria. A Bavarian tradition that is hardly practiced anywhere else today as it is in Aying.
The traditional costume flea market on Saturday morning (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) offers exclusively used traditional clothing — Dirndls, Lederhosen, Janker, hats, jewelry — at fair prices. A treasure trove for anyone looking for a well-maintained "second-hand Tracht". On Sunday, the farmers' and arts and crafts market with around 100 stalls spreads across the entire brewery premises and the loading hall — from alpine dairy cheese to hand-forged ironware stalls.
During the festival days, the brewery itself is open — the Ayinger brewers show the brewhouse and the bottling plant in action. Beer brewing up close, with a tasting of the freshly brewed specialties. A rare opportunity to visit a working private brewery during its ongoing operations.
From October 8 to 12, 2026, the beer village of Aying will once again transform into the main stage of Upper Bavarian brewery tradition. The private brewery Ayinger invites you to the Bräu-Kirta — five festival days with a complete program of festival tent, concerts, market, and brewery tour.
The opening on Thursday evening features a parade behind the magnificent brewery wagon from the Maypole down to the festival grounds. The highlight on Saturday: the ox race with oxen from Walpertskirchen. The festival concludes on Monday evening with the traditional kettle meat feast.
