Sommer DOM in St. Pauli: Northern Germany's Biggest Funfair
For five weeks, from July 24 to August 30, the Heiligengeistfeld between St. Pauli and the Schanze turns into a sprawl of roller coasters, Ferris wheels, stalls and beer tents. On the weekend of August 8–9, the Sommer DOM is in full swing — widely considered northern Germany's largest funfair. Fridays traditionally open with fireworks, then the rows of stalls stay busy well into the night.

ELBRIOT Festival at the Wholesale Market: One Hard Day With Powerwolf
On August 8, the Großmarkt next to the Deichtorhallen and HafenCity becomes the stage for Hamburg's big metal open-air. Headliner Powerwolf is joined by Savatage, Thy Art Is Murder, Danko Jones, Orden Ogan and Warkings. New this season: its own Beergarden Stage with Mambo Kurt.

Kampnagel International Summer Festival: Avant-Garde Since 1989
For three weeks in August, from the 5th to the 23rd, Kampnagel in Winterhude runs its International Summer Festival — Hamburg's leading independent stage for contemporary performance. Dance, theatre, performance, concerts, visual art and experimental hybrids from around the world fill eleven industrial halls. Running since 1989, it counts among Europe's most important avant-garde gatherings, and on August 8–9 it's in full swing.
Triennial of Photography: Eleven Exhibitions Across the City
Every three years, the Triennial of Photography Hamburg turns the Hanseatic city into a stage for international photographic art, from June to September. Eleven exhibitions run in parallel across eight renowned venues — including the Deichtorhallen, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Bucerius Kunst Forum, MARKK, Kunstverein, Kunsthaus and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe — curated around a shared theme. From August 7 to 9, the 47th edition of the Wutzrock Festival runs by Lake Eichbaum in Hamburg-Allermöhe, one of Germany's oldest free open-air festivals. Punk, reggae, rock, ska, hip-hop and indie take turns on stage, alongside a kids' fair, info booths and camping. This political summer festival of Hamburg's east has always stood for a clear stance against the far right.
elbsommer in HafenCity: Every Weekend Through Late August
elbsommer turns HafenCity and Rothenburgsort into an open-air stage every weekend through the end of August. Along the Überseeboulevard, dance evenings, stand-up comedy, poetry slams, sports activities and readings take turns — free, no registration, open to anyone passing the Elbe on August 8 or 9.
Water-Light Concerts in Planten un Blomen: 25 Minutes of Water, Light and Sound
Evening after evening, the lake in Planten un Blomen turns into a stage of water, light and music. Up to 100 water jets and hundreds of light sources compose a roughly 25-minute show that gets a new theme every two weeks, from Tchaikovsky to Tanzania, from Bacchanal to cinema.
