About Phototriennale Hamburg

Every three years, the Triennale der Photographie Hamburg transforms the Hanseatic city into a stage for international photographic art between June and September: eleven exhibitions in eight renowned venues — Deichtorhallen, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Bucerius Kunst Forum, MARKK, Kunstverein, Kunsthaus, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Museum der Arbeit — curated around a common central theme. The 9th Triennale in 2026 will be realized under the artistic direction of Dr. Mark Sealy OBE.

Three Months of Photography in the Hanseatic City

Since 1999, the Triennale der Photographie Hamburg has been one of Europe's most important photography festivals. Unlike a single exhibition, the eleven main exhibitions are spread across the entire city: the main venue is the Deichtorhallen Hamburg (Halle für aktuelle Kunst, PHOXXI – Haus der Photographie Temporär, Sammlung F. C. Gundlach, Sammlung Falckenberg), accompanied by equally renowned partner institutions — Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Kunstverein in Hamburg, MARKK – Museum am Rothenbaum, Museum der Arbeit, and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.

One Central Theme, Many Voices

Each Triennale is dedicated to a curatorial central theme that all venues engage with. In 2026, the motto is "Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other". The artistic director is Dr. Mark Sealy OBE, a British curator and director of Autograph in London. Sealy is known for his work in making overlooked perspectives in photography visible.

More Than Just Exhibitions

The Triennale is not just an exhibition format: artist talks, performances, screenings, symposia, musical contributions, and special guided tours complement the program. The Opening Days (an intensive opening week) and Triennale Expanded with 15 projects from Hamburg's independent photo and art scene open up space for the local scene and the HfBK Hamburg.

Hamburg as a City of Photography

Hamburg has a special relationship with photography: F. C. Gundlach's collection laid the foundation for the Haus der Photographie, and HFBK Hamburg trains its own generation of photographic artists. For three months, the Triennale turns the districts of HafenCity, Altstadt, St. Georg, and Eppendorf into a cohesive festival area.
