International Photography Festival in Hamburg's Museums and Exhibition Spaces
Since 1999, the Triennale der Photographie Hamburg has been one of Europe's most important photography festivals. Unlike a single exhibition, the eleven main exhibitions are spread across the entire city: the main venue is the Deichtorhallen Hamburg (Halle für aktuelle Kunst, PHOXXI – Haus der Photographie Temporär, Sammlung F. C. Gundlach, Sammlung Falckenberg), accompanied by equally renowned partner institutions — Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Kunstverein in Hamburg, MARKK – Museum am Rothenbaum, Museum der Arbeit, and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.
Each Triennale is dedicated to a curatorial central theme that all venues engage with. In 2026, the motto is "Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other". The artistic director is Dr. Mark Sealy OBE, a British curator and director of Autograph in London. Sealy is known for his work in making overlooked perspectives in photography visible.
The Triennale is not just an exhibition format: artist talks, performances, screenings, symposia, musical contributions, and special guided tours complement the program. The Opening Days (an intensive opening week) and Triennale Expanded with 15 projects from Hamburg's independent photo and art scene open up space for the local scene and the HfBK Hamburg.
Hamburg has a special relationship with photography: F. C. Gundlach's collection laid the foundation for the Haus der Photographie, and HFBK Hamburg trains its own generation of photographic artists. For three months, the Triennale turns the districts of HafenCity, Altstadt, St. Georg, and Eppendorf into a cohesive festival area.
From June 5 to September 22, 2026, the 9th Triennale der Photographie will present eleven major exhibitions in eight Hamburg institutions under the central theme "Alliance, Infinity, Love – in the Face of the Other". The artistic direction is led by Dr. Mark Sealy OBE, Director of Autograph (London).
The official opening will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 8 PM at the Deichtorhallen. The Opening Days run from June 4 to 14 with an opening week of artist talks, performances, screenings, music, and special guided tours — the Opening Parcours on June 4 will lead through all eleven institutional exhibitions as well as the 15 projects of Triennale Expanded.
