Hamburg's Black, Doom, and Heavy Metal Festival in the Markthalle
Hell Over Hammaburg is one of Germany's most renowned underground metal festivals and firmly anchored in the North German scene. "Hammaburg" is the historical name for Hamburg from the 9th century — the combination of Hell and Hammaburg programmatically aligns the festival with a blend of pagan-historical atmosphere and uncompromising metal.
The venue is the Markthalle Hamburg at Klosterwall 11, right in the heart of Hamburg's old town. The Markthalle is one of North Germany's most traditional concert halls; it features two stages — the Große Halle (Main Hall) and the smaller MarX — allowing for parallel programming with overlapping schedules.
Hell Over Hammaburg has been held annually since 2013; 2026 marks the 12th edition. Programmatically, the festival covers a broad spectrum of metal: Black Metal with an atmospheric touch (Forteresse, Helheim, Sun Worship), Doom and Heavy Metal with a classic feel (Atlantean Kodex, Christian Mistress, Argus), Death Metal (Phrenelith), Sludge/Post-Metal (This Gift Is A Curse), up to unique experimental formats.
The 2026 lineup features a deliberately curated selection of 17 bands, including:
What sets Hell Over Hammaburg apart from commercial mega-festivals is its curatorial rigor. No mainstream acts, no sponsor logos on the stages, but a declaration of love for the subgenres of underground metal from Scandinavia, North America, and Germany. The scale — 17 bands, two stages, two days — is manageable enough for every band to receive its due attention.
The 12th edition, with 17 bands from around the world, is the largest Hell Over Hammaburg to date. The two days are split between the Große Halle and MarX Saal, with overlapping programming — those who want to see all bands will need to switch between halls and plan their time.
The originally announced band (DOLCH) will not perform in 2026 — Skräcken will play as a replacement. Charly Lownoise was booked as a headliner replacement for an ill artist. Tickets from €108.25, day tickets are not available. Indoor festival, no camping.
The running order may change. Current band information on metal.de and the official festival blog.
