The legendary free open-air rock concert on Maundy Thursday — a tradition with cult status in Ostholstein
Gruber Osterrock is one of those small festivals that, without much advertising, attract a regular audience from all over the region for decades. The concept is as simple as it gets: on Maundy Thursday (or the announced date during the Easter period), the central village square Paasch-Eyler-Platz in Grube is transformed into an open-air stage. Several bands play rock — from hard classics to cover sets.
Admission is completely free. There are no VIP areas, no seat reservations, no elaborate staging — but a classic village open-air with beer garden tables, a mobile stage, food stalls, and an atmosphere somewhere between a community festival and a music festival. This simplicity is part of the charm — those who have experienced Gruber Osterrock once usually come back the following year.
Grube is a small municipality with just under 1,300 inhabitants in the Ostholstein district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located south of Großenbrode on the Baltic Sea. The place thrives on agriculture, tourism on the Lübecker Bucht, and an active club scene — the Osterrock is one of the few major event formats that puts the village on the map far beyond its size.
The date and format fit perfectly with the seasonal transition mood: shortly before Easter, the weather gets warmer, the days get longer, many people are on holiday, and the village receives visitors from the region. The Osterrock captures this mood and gives the region a special open-air tradition beyond the well-known summer festivals.
Specific bands are announced in the weeks before the event via the Facebook event and local posters. Those who want to be on the safe side should follow the event page on Facebook (gruber-osterrock) and check for updates from the municipality of Grube. Usually, regional rock and cover bands are expected, with occasional surprise acts.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on the official Facebook event page of Gruber Osterrock. The exact date is set for March 29 — possibly slightly deviating from the traditional Maundy Thursday format, which occasionally happens with local events due to volunteer availability.
The organizer is the municipality of Grube together with local promoters. Bands will be announced — as always — in the weeks before the concert via Facebook and local media.
