SonneMondSterne Festival in Saalburg-Ebersdorf
Since 1997, the SonneMondSterne festival has turned Lake Bleiloch near Saalburg-Ebersdorf, in the Saale-Orla district, into one of Germany's biggest electronic-music stages. From August 7 to 9, 2026, between 35,000 and 40,000 visitors dance for three nights to techno, house, hip-hop and electro, with an internationally billed line-up. Kulturarena Jena
For seven weeks, Kulturarena Jena fills Theaterplatz with more than 50 dates spanning music, theatre, classical overtures and film nights. The 34th edition runs through August 23, 2026, and in a good year draws around 70,000 visitors. Names announced for 2026 include Bosse, Sportfreunde Stiller, Agnes Obel and Kruder & Dorfmeister. Domstufen-Festspiele Erfurt: Jesus Christ Superstar
On the 70 steps in front of Erfurt Cathedral and St. Severus' Church, one of Germany's most spectacular open-air stages goes up every summer. In 2026, Theater Erfurt premieres Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Peter Lund with an international cast. The run goes from August 7 to 30, 2026, so opening weekend falls right on our dates. Party.San Metal Open Air in Obermehler
Marking its 30th anniversary under the motto "Hell Is Here," the metal scene gathers from August 6 to 8, 2026, at the Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield in the Unstrut-Hainich district. 57 bands are confirmed, headlined by Testament, Amorphis and Hypocrisy, alongside Marduk, Dark Funeral, Alcest and Moonspell. Weimarer Sommer
From June through the end of August, Weimarer Sommer turns the city of Goethe and Schiller into an open-air stage. The 2026 line-up includes MILOW, SCHILLER and Asaf Avidan at Weimarhallenpark, plus the Staatskapelle Weimar performing "Feel the Love Tonight." Yiddish Summer Weimar
Since 1999, Weimar has hosted the world's most important festival and workshop institute for Yiddish music, language and culture, every July and August. Through August 15, 2026, musicians, scholars and dancers from Europe, Israel and the US gather across the city centre. The 2026 theme, "Yiddish Wo:men — Another Story of Modernity," puts women's perspectives in Yiddish culture at the centre of the programme. 66th Weimar Master Classes: finale on August 8
The 66th Weimar Master Classes at the Franz Liszt School of Music close on August 8, 2026, with a grand finale concert by the best-performing participants. For two weeks, guest professors and advanced students from around the world have worked on violin, cello, piano, flute, tuba and composition. Schalkauer Vogelschießen
From August 7 to 10, 2026, the town of Schalkau in the Sonneberg district holds its traditional Schützenfest, a marksmen's festival. Thursday evening brings the opening, Friday the shooting competitions and the tapping of the first keg, Saturday the traditional "Standela," and Sunday the parade and the crowning of the shooting king. Bräetmicher Kram- und Kräutermarkt in Großbreitenbach
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, Großbreitenbach in the Ilm district hosts central Germany's largest specialty market for herbs and natural products. The market traces back to trading traditions from around 1550 and grew out of the historic "Olitäten" trade, the regional production of home remedies. Kurkonzerte Bad Lobenstein
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, a brass band plays "between Kosel and Lemnitz" outside the ARDESIA thermal baths in Bad Lobenstein, the next date in the town's Sunday spa-concert series, which runs from May to August. Concerts run from 2 to 4pm, admission is free, and shows only go ahead in good weather, with no rain date scheduled. It's a free, no-booking-required afternoon programme in the Saale-Orla district. Saalestrand Rudolstadt: the season's last weekend
Saalestrand Rudolstadt turns the Bleichwiese meadow on the Saale riverbank into an urban beach bar, with 60 tonnes of sand, every year from Ascension Day onward. The 2026 season ends on August 9, making the weekend of August 8-9 the last chance for live music spanning electro, funk, pop and Cuban rhythms among deckchairs and sandcastles.
