Summer cultural festival in the UNESCO World Heritage city
Weimar is the city of Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Bach, and Cranach — and the birthplace of the Weimar Republic. Eight buildings and ensembles of "Classical Weimar Architecture and Literature" are UNESCO World Heritage sites, as is the Bauhaus. In summer, the Weimar Summer complements the city's historical significance with a festival of open-air events, bringing concerts, theatre, dance, and street culture into public spaces from June to September.
The main venue is the Weimarhallenpark, the green belt around the Weimarhalle. In summer, an open-air concert stage is set up here, capable of holding around 8,000 spectators. The 2026 programme combines pop, classical music, and singer-songwriters:
From June 5 to July 3, 2026, the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar will stage Molière's "The Misanthrope" as an open-air comedy on the stage at the e-werk — a former power station that now serves as a theatre and event venue. The production promises summery-baroque theatrical fun between classical comedy and contemporary adaptation.
In addition to the main events mentioned, the Weimar Summer includes numerous smaller events at various venues throughout the city — the Park an der Ilm becomes a concert venue, the Theaterplatz a summer theatre, and the Goethe-Schiller courtyards a festival arena. It is a city of culture that blossoms in summer, combining its tourist and literary aura with contemporary programming.
Visitors to the Weimar Summer can combine their stay with sightseeing — Goethe's House, Schiller's House, the Bauhaus Museum, the Anna Amalia Library, the New Museum, the Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial (12 km north). Weimar is one of Germany's richest cultural cities in a compact area.
The 2026 summer season combines theatre, classical music, and pop in the UNESCO World Heritage city. The Deutsches Nationaltheater opens the season on June 5 with Molière's "The Misanthrope" at the e-werk, a four-week open-air comedy. From the end of June, the Weimarhallenpark takes over with five major concerts on individual evenings.
