About Kräutermarkt Großbreitenbach

The Bräetmicher Kram- und Kräutermarkt in Großbreitenbach (Ilm-Kreis, Thuringia) is considered the largest specialist market in Central Germany for herbs and natural products. The market combines old Großbreitenbach market traditions (since around 1550) with the Olitäten trade – the production of natural remedies, which was regionally significant after the Thirty Years' War until the 20th century. First held as a modern specialist market in 1990, it has developed into the largest herb event in the "Thuringian Herb Garden/Olitätenland". The 35th edition will take place on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bahnhofstraße and on the festival meadow.

Großbreitenbach in the Olitätenland

Großbreitenbach is located in the Ilm district on the edge of the Thuringian Forest. The region is traditionally known as the "Thuringian Herb Garden" or "Olitätenland" – named after "Olitäten", natural remedies made from plant substances, which became a regionally important economic sector here after the Thirty Years' War. Olitäten traders traveled throughout Central Germany with their tinctures, ointments, and oils, spreading the reputation of Großbreitenbach's natural healing far beyond the region.

Market Tradition Since the 16th Century

Großbreitenbach has held market rights since around 1550. Over the centuries, the local market developed into a hub for general goods, crafts, and the region's specific Olitäten. In 1990 – after reunification – this tradition was revived and institutionalized as the Bräetmicher Kram- und Kräutermarkt. Today, the market is one of the largest herb events in Germany.

What Visitors Can Find

  • Herbs – fresh, dried, in mixtures – from regional producers
  • Natural Remedies – tinctures, ointments, teas, incense in the Olitäten style
  • Natural Cosmetics – handmade soaps, creams, oils
  • Honey and Bee Products – directly from regional beekeepers
  • Handicrafts with a connection to nature – wood, stone, ceramics
  • Regional Specialties – ham, sausage, cheese, farmer's bread, wine, liqueurs
  • General Goods and Books on herbalism and natural healing

Culinary Delights and Stage

Accompanying the market, there are culinary stands with Thuringian specialties – Bratwurst, dumplings, mushroom dishes, wild herb dishes – and a stage program with folk music, lectures on herbs, and hands-on activities for children.
