Rennsteigwarte – View over the Thuringian Forest

The Rennsteigwarte on the Eselsberg is one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Rennsteig – the 169 km long ridge hiking trail that runs through the Thuringian Forest from Hörschel near Eisenach to Blankenstein. At an altitude of 843 meters, the tower offers panoramic views over the Henneberg ridge, the Schiefergebirge (Slate Mountains), and on clear days, far into the Rhön region.

Masserberg – Climatic Health Resort on the Rennsteig

Masserberg is a state-recognized climatic health resort and one of the most traditional holiday resorts in Southern Thuringia. Located in the Hildburghausen district, the town thrives on nature tourism, hiking, and winter sports. The Eselsberg with its Rennsteigwarte is one of the central tourist attractions of the town.

Club Festival in the Berghain

The Tower Festival is jointly organized by three local clubs: Thüringer Wald Verein Masserberg e.V. (hiking club), Förderverein der Bergwacht Masserberg e.V. (mountain rescue support), and SG «Rennsteig» Masserberg e.V. (sports club). This constellation shapes the festival: down-to-earth, close to nature, and run by volunteers.

Family-Friendly Mountain Festival Atmosphere

The format is deliberately small and family-oriented. Regional catering with Thuringian specialties, live music, hikes around the tower, and family activities characterize the day. A perfect destination for hikers and families from Southern Thuringia and the Rhön.
