North Rhine-Westphalia, June 27-28: from the Rainbow Festival to ExtraSchicht night

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the Rainbow Festival at the Fühlinger See to ExtraSchicht across the Ruhr, twelve outings for a weekend of stadium rock, wine lanes and a Viking market.

What's on in North Rhine-Westphalia this weekend of June 27 and 28? The last weekend of June picks up the pace. For one night, the Ruhr turns into a single glowing industrial stage. The Pride season draws its loudest circles in the Rhineland. And open-air stages fill from Münster to Haltern.

Our pick this time is the contrast between a brash festival summer and quiet niches: one day metal riffs roar in Büren and schlager hits boom by the Fühlinger See, the next children craft picture books in Schwalenberg and Vikings forge iron in Münster. Twelve outings for a weekend that runs from a stadium concert to monastic calm.

Rainbow Festival Cologne: NRW's biggest queer open-air at the Fühlinger See

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, the regatta island of the Fühlinger See becomes NRW's largest LGBTQ+ open-air. The Rainbow Festival Cologne runs two main stages: the Sunshine Stage with pop and schlager (No Angels, Boney M., Vengaboys, Marianne Rosenberg, Kamrad, Mia Julia and the Cologne band Kasalla) and the Aqua Stage with EDM and house, featuring Felix Jaehn and David Puentez among others. Right in the middle of the ColognePride season, this lakeside festival is probably the most exuberant date of the weekend. Anyone who prefers to celebrate Pride dancing rather than marching will find a vast site with lake views, a broad line-up and festival spirit from morning to night. A day full of colours, beats and schlager anthems on the edge of Cologne.

ExtraSchicht at Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen: the night of industrial culture

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, ExtraSchicht opens the Ruhr's industrial heritage for the 22nd time. The central venue in Gelsenkirchen is the Nordsternpark, with gallery tours, the panoramic terrace of the Nordstern tower and a laser-pyrotechnics show in the amphitheatre. New in 2026 are the Heilig-Kreuz church and the Bochumer Straße quarter. One night, one ticket for around 50 locations across the region, plus shuttle services and free local transport into the early hours. ExtraSchicht is the Ruhr's showpiece format: disused collieries, blast furnaces and gasometers become illuminated backdrops for theatre, dance, music and light art. Anyone who wants to experience the industrial heritage in a different light should pencil in this Saturday evening.

Vainstream Rockfest in Münster: two days of punk, rock and metal at the Hawerkamp

The Vainstream Rockfest is one of the most important festivals on the German rock, punk and metal scene. On June 26 and 27, 2026, the Hawerkamp in Münster hosts All Time Low, Rise Against, Hollywood Undead, Black Veil Brides and Architects, among others. Every ticket category has been sold out for months, proof of the festival's firm place in the scene's calendar. The urban industrial site at the Hawerkamp provides the fittingly raw backdrop for a line-up that gathers genre classics and new acts alike. Anyone who has secured a ticket will experience one of the most intense festival weekends of the NRW summer in Münster, far from green meadows and right in the concrete. Loud guitars, mosh pits and good spirits guaranteed.

BOArocks in Büren: Powerwolf meets Sarah Connor in the Almeauen

From June 26 to 27, 2026, the festival meadow in the Almeauen, against the backdrop of the former Jesuit college in Büren, becomes the open-air festival BOArocks. The seventh edition since the 2018 premiere offers perhaps the most extreme genre contrast in the festival's history: on Friday, June 26, there is heavy metal with headliner Powerwolf, plus Warkings and Induction, doors from 5pm. On Saturday, June 27, pop star Sarah Connor takes the stage. Where the power-metal crowd raises its fists one evening, an entirely different audience sings along the next. It is exactly this willingness to do the splits that makes the East Westphalian festival special. For anyone who doesn't see heavy riffs and big pop choruses as a contradiction, Büren is the weekend destination in the Paderborn region.

Sunset Beach Festival in Haltern am See: MEDUZA and Claptone on the natural beach

On June 27, 2026, the Haltern lido turns into an open-air club. On the stage on the 800-metre natural beach of the Haltern reservoir, the Sunset Beach Festival features MEDUZA and Claptone as headliners. Also on the line-up: YouNotUs, Noel Holler, The Ironix, Micky Hurts, Ely Oaks, Salvatore Mancuso and Marlon Kindermann. Sand underfoot, house and dance over the water, sunset over the reservoir: the setting makes the festival more than just a concert. Conveniently, the ticket includes the regional transport combi-ticket and the shuttle from Haltern station. Anyone who prefers to spend the summer weekend barefoot and to electronic beats will find the perfect beach party in the northern Ruhr.

HOA Haan Open Air: classic rock between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal

On June 26 and 27, 2026, the HOA Haan Open Air Festival returns to the car park of the Ostermann furniture store at Landstraße 40 in Haan, in the Mettmann district. Two days of classic rock and hard rock between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal, with British NWOBHM legends Tygers of Pan Tang as Friday headliners and the Bavarian glam-rock show band John Diva & the Rockets of Love. The festival has established itself as a down-to-earth home game for lovers of handmade rock music, far from the big arenas. An uncomplicated festival character, short distances and a programme that bets on substance rather than gimmicks. For rock fans in the Bergisches Land and on the Lower Rhine, the HOA is a reliable date in the summer calendar.

Open Air at the Grugapark in Essen: the Philharmonic under the open sky

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, the Essen Philharmonic perform from 7pm to 9pm in the Grugapark for an open-air evening. The programme features Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Wolfram-Maria Märtig conducts, with presenter Thorsten Stepath guiding the evening. Tickets cost 23 euros. Classical music in the sprawling greenery of the Gruga park, with a blanket and picnic basket under the open sky: this format is one of the most popular summer events of the Ruhr metropolis. While the Ruhr glows for ExtraSchicht a few kilometres away, the Grugapark offers the quieter, more festive counterpart. An evening for anyone who prefers grand orchestral music in a park rather than a concert hall.

WeinSommer Aachen: four days of wine tasting on the Katschhof

From June 25 to 28, 2026, the WeinSommer Aachen transforms the Katschhof, the central square between Aachen Cathedral and the historic town hall, into an open-air wine tasting. Around 20 winemakers from Rhineland-Palatinate present their vintages on the UNESCO World Heritage site. It is open Thursday and Friday from 4pm to midnight, Saturday from 2pm to midnight and Sunday from noon to 8pm. Admission is free. It is the combination of a first-class setting and a relaxed atmosphere of indulgence that defines the WeinSommer: a glass of Riesling or Pinot Noir in the shadow of the cathedral, with culinary accompaniment and a summer evening mood. For anyone who prefers a gourmet weekend to a loud one, Aachen is the right address on the western edge of NRW.

Gocher Sommerkirmes: funfair and shooters' parade on the Lower Rhine

From June 27 to 30, 2026, the time-honoured Gocher Sommerkirmes turns the town centre of Goch into a lively funfair. More than 40 showmen bring carousels, ghost trains, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel and sweet stalls to the Lower Rhine. It opens with a classic shooters' parade, Monday is set up as a family day with reduced prices, and on Tuesday a big firework display crowns the fair. A folk-festival institution that links generations and completely transforms the townscape for four days. Glittering lights, fairground music and the scent of roasted almonds are part and parcel of the last June weekend in Goch. For families and all who love classic fairground fun, the Sommerkirmes is a fixture on the Lower Rhine.

Viking market at the Mühlenhof in Münster: 150 craftspeople and warriors

On June 27 and 28, 2026, from 10am, the Mühlenhof open-air museum in Münster turns into an early-medieval and Viking-era world. At the 8th early medieval and Viking market, around 150 craftspeople, traders and warriors show their skills: smithing, bone craft, medieval cooking, grilled salmon and mead. Add to that spectacular demonstrations of combat techniques, historical games and hands-on activities for families. The spacious open-air museum offers the ideal setting for an immersion in bygone centuries, far from any stage or amplifier. Anyone who also experiences the loud Vainstream in Münster the same weekend could hardly pick a greater contrast. For history enthusiasts and families, the Mühlenhof is a living history book in the open air.

Pinocchinello in Schwalenberg: the children's book festival in the old town

On Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 11am to 6pm, more than 20 workshops and activities turn the medieval centre of Schwalenberg in the Lippe district into an open stage for children's literature. Pinocchinello, the annual children's book festival, offers book illustration, kamishibai theatre, picture-book cinema, comics and poetry workshops. Admission is free. The picturesque old town of Schwalenberg is considered one of the loveliest in East Westphalia and forms a charming backdrop for a festival that puts the joy of reading and creativity for the youngest centre stage. While amplifiers boom elsewhere, imagination rules here. For families with small children, Pinocchinello is the relaxed, imaginative counterpoint to the festival bustle, set in the Lippe hill country.

ColognePride / CSD Köln: Europe's biggest Pride festival rolls on

ColognePride is the largest Pride festival in Europe and Germany's central CSD event. From June 19 to July 5, 2026, Cologne is the capital of the queer movement, and this weekend sits right in the thick of it: Heumarkt, Gürzenich and Alter Markt fill with stages, readings, parties and political debates, long before the great CSD march on July 5 with its roughly 65,000 participants. Anyone who wants to feel the movement's energy without plunging into the final week's crowds should come now. Cologne's city centre around Heumarkt becomes an open festival ground where visibility and celebration go hand in hand. Together with the Rainbow Festival, ColognePride makes this weekend the high point of NRW's queer season.
