Tip

Viking Age at Mühlenhof — Early Medieval to Touch
On the weekend of June 27th/28th, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM each day, time will turn back significantly at the Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum Münster — into the Early Medieval and Viking Age eras. Around 150 craftspeople, traders, and warriors in historical attire will set up their tents among the historic farmhouses of the open-air museum, establish workshops, open field kitchens, and demonstrate combat techniques. The 8th edition of the market is an established must-attend event for medieval enthusiasts from all over the Münsterland region.
Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum — Westphalian Idyll by the Aasee
The Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum is located directly on the Münster Aasee lake, in the west of the city. The approximately 5-hectare site features over 30 historic buildings from the Münsterland region — farmhouses, mills, workshops, bakehouses, a school. Transferred and faithfully reconstructed, they tell the story of rural Westphalia from the 16th to the 20th century. For the Viking market, the grounds temporarily become an Early Medieval settlement — a perfect backdrop for reenactment.
What You Can Experience
The program offers the full spectrum of Early Medieval life:
- Blacksmiths — iron tools, knives, and jewelry are forged at the open fire. You can watch as glowing iron takes shape.
- Bone Carving — historical craftspeople demonstrate how tools, game pieces, and jewelry are made from animal bones — a technique common in the Viking Age.
- Medieval Cuisine — bread is baked in a clay oven, stew is cooked in a large cauldron, mead and beer are served in wooden cups.
- Salmon Grilling — fresh salmon is cooked on wooden planks over an open fire — a spectacle you don't often see.
- Mead Service — the classic honey wine of the Vikings and Germanic tribes, served from wooden barrels and in horn mugs.
- Market Stalls — historical clothing, jewelry, leather goods, handicrafts, books on Early Medieval history.
Spectacular: Combat Demonstrations
The highlight of the market is the combat demonstrations by reenactment warriors. Sword fighting, axe maneuvers, Viking archery, shield wall formations — these are presented historically accurately and with professional choreography. The fighters are often specialists from the international reenactment scene and bring a rare realism to the market. Plan to be at the main square during the demonstration times (schedules posted at the entrance).
Family Program and Hands-On Activities
There are special hands-on stations for children: Viking games, archery with practice bows, coin minting, sword making with cardboard and felt. Some stalls offer Viking face painting — if the children go home with beards and tattoos, the day is saved.
Münster — The Cycling City with a Historic Soul
Münster, the capital of the Münsterland region, is a university city with about 320,000 inhabitants and one of the highest cycling rates in Germany. If you live in Münster: cycle to Mühlenhof in 15 minutes from the city center. If you're coming from the Münsterland region: take the train to Münster Hbf, then bus line 14. If you're coming by car: parking is available at Aasee, but is often full on Viking weekends — the bus is the better choice.
