Bergstrasse wine market, Grimm fairy tales and open-air cinema: Hesse on July 4-5

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the 72nd Bergstrasse Wine Market in Heppenheim and the Brothers Grimm Festival to the open-air cinema launch in Frankfurt, twelve ideas for July 4 and 5 in Hesse.

What is on in Hesse this weekend of July 4 and 5? High summer lies over the region, and the highlights are spread from the Rheingau to northern Hesse. On the Bergstrasse, Heppenheim winds down one of the oldest wine markets in Hesse, in Frankfurt-Hoechst a ten-day festival mile begins along the Main, and in the courtyard of the old police headquarters the open-air cinema launches a new season.

Our pick of the week is the blend of wine and stage: while Heppenheim and Eltville turn their old towns into tasting rooms, Hanau and Wiesbaden offer theatre and classical music under the open sky. In between, a 187-year-old cherry market in central Hesse, a Huguenot market in the Taunus and a nature-park festival at the Edersee. Twelve ideas for a weekend that runs from the Riesling stand to the fairy-tale premiere.

72nd Bergstrasse Wine Market in Heppenheim: Hesse's great tasting room

The Bergstrasse Wine Market ranks among the oldest and largest wine festivals in Hesse, and this weekend it heads into its finale. Until July 5, the historic old town of Heppenheim turns into an open-air tasting room for its 72nd edition. Around 80,000 visitors enjoy Bergstrasse Riesling and Spaetburgunder, with live music on four stages around the Grosser Markt. As a tradition in even-numbered years, 2026 brings the ceremonial crowning of the new wine queen. If you want to round off Sunday with a glass in hand and half-timbered houses behind you, this is the place. The closing days draw good crowds, so arriving early secures the best spots.

Brothers Grimm Festival in Hanau: fairy-tale theatre in the amphitheatre

In the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, the Brothers Grimm Festival runs until July 31 in its 42nd season. The stage is the covered amphitheatre in Hanau's castle garden, with the musical world premiere of "Tischlein, deck dich!", the family play "Snow White", Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus" and the youth production "Das Herz eines Boxers" in the Walloon ruin. With more than 90,000 expected visitors and a record advance sale, the festival is among the region's largest open-air theatre events. The roof keeps performances relaxed even when the weather turns. A destination for families looking for open-air theatre this weekend.

Rheingau Music Festival: classical music between Wiesbaden and the Rheingau

The Rheingau Music Festival ranks among the largest and most renowned classical festivals in Europe, and this weekend it is in the middle of its summer season. Until September 5, the programme spreads 158 concerts across 26 venues between Wiesbaden and the Rheingau. The artist in residence is the exceptional Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino, while the country focus falls on Great Britain with ensembles such as VOCES8, the King's Singers and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Monastery churches, wine estates and palaces serve as backdrops, giving the festival its distinctive charm. It is worth checking the weekend programme, as many concerts sell out fast. Here, classical music and landscape form a rare pairing.

Hoechster Schlossfest in Frankfurt: ten days of festival mile by the Main

From July 3 to 12, the Vereinsring Hoechst turns the Brueningpark grounds and the Main riverside into a ten-day festival mile. The Hoechster Schlossfest opens with a harbour festival, and the weekend then belongs to the Fest der Vereine in the Brueningpark on July 5 and 6. Add to that the Hoechst organ summer in the Justinus church, a design trail with pop-up galleries and a family funfair. The big Kerb on the riverside (July 10 to 12) closes the event. If you want to catch the first festival weekend, the Frankfurt district of Hoechst offers a lively mix of club life, music and river promenade. An easygoing date for a summer afternoon by the water.

Freiluftkino Frankfurt: cinema launch under the open sky

On July 4, exactly this weekend, the Freiluftkino Frankfurt opens its thirteenth season. The setting is the courtyard of the old police headquarters in central Frankfurt, where current films, arthouse and classics screen under the open sky until August 25. The summer is catered by Chez Vivi and Ciccione, and advance sales opened on June 1. The lost-place atmosphere in the heart of the city gives this cinema its special appeal. If you would rather spend the warm summer evening with a screen than a stage, the season opener offers a free choice. A fine contrast to the big folk festivals of the weekend.

Korbach Old Town Culture Festival: four stages in the Hanseatic town

From July 2 to 5, the Korbach Old Town Culture Festival turns the historic centre of the northern Hessian Hanseatic town of Korbach into a stage mile. On four stages, bands play jazz, blues, pop, folk, rock and even power metal, alongside comedy, small theatre, cabaret, a craft market, gourmet stalls and street performers. More than 90 percent of the events are free, and access to the old town is open. The range from quiet tones to hard guitars makes the festival one of the most varied dates in northern Hesse. If you are after a town festival with a real music programme, Korbach is a good bet this weekend.

Gladenbach Cherry Market: 187th edition in central Hesse

The Gladenbach Cherry Market is one of the largest and oldest folk festivals in central Hesse. Since 1837, the cherry harvest has been celebrated with a four-day town festival, this year from July 2 to 5 in its 187th edition. Around 110,000 visitors come for the food alley, the large festival tent, the funfair and the trinket market. The highlight is the traditional parade on Sunday, with more than 50 floats and music groups winding through the centre of Gladenbach. If you like folk-festival spirit and living tradition, here is an event with almost two centuries of history. Sunday's parade brings this year's edition to an atmospheric close.

Huguenot Market in Friedrichsdorf: a street festival in the Taunus

From July 3 to 5, the historic old town of Friedrichsdorf turns into one continuous street festival. The Huguenot Market, organised by the Foerderverein Hugo e.V., brings three days of live music on two stages at the Landgrafenplatz and the town hall parking deck. There are also crafts, food trucks, a children's programme and a food and drink offer with regional wine, craft beer and international specialities. The festival recalls the town's Huguenot founding story and fills the lanes with life all weekend. For families and visitors from the Hochtaunus, it is an easy day out in the green. A date for strolling, tasting and lingering.

Eltville Sparkling Wine and Biedermeier Festival: 89th edition in the sparkling-wine town

From July 3 to 6, Eltville am Rhein, Germany's sparkling-wine town with 150 years of tradition, hosts the 89th edition of the Sparkling Wine and Biedermeier Festival. Four stages line the Rhine promenade and the rose garden at the Electoral Palace. On Sunday, visitors stroll in historic Biedermeier costumes, with sparkling-wine tastings at the traditional houses Mumm, Matheus Mueller and Schloss Vaux, plus Rhine cruises. The blend of sparkling wine, river views and nostalgic costume makes the festival unmistakable. If you want to combine the Rhine with a glass of sparkling wine this weekend, Eltville offers the right backdrop. The closing fireworks follow on Monday evening.

Kulturzelt Kassel: a genre mix at the Drahtbruecke

The Kulturzelt Kassel runs until July 11 at the Drahtbruecke in the Auepark. Since 1986, the tent, with around 650 seats per evening, has been one of the most independent festival formats in northern Germany. The programme is deliberately cross-genre, ranging from Apparat to Christone "Kingfish" Ingram and on to Rainbirds, Sleaford Mods, Wallis Bird and The High Kings. The intimate tent atmosphere brings stage and audience close together, a contrast to the big open-air folk festivals of the weekend. If you are looking for a concert evening with character in Kassel, keep an eye on the current season's schedule. A tip for anyone who wants to listen off the mainstream.

Giessen Musical Summer: 50th edition with a special date on July 4

The Giessen Musical Summer has been a fixture of the Hessian summer calendar since 1976 and celebrates its 50th edition in 2026. More than 30 local bands and ensembles from Giessen and the surrounding area play free of charge from June to early August in the Schiffenberg monastery courtyard and on the StadtRaumBuehne. For the anniversary there is a special date on July 4, exactly this weekend. The festival thrives on the commitment of the regional music scene and makes classical, pop and more accessible without an entrance fee. If you want to discover central Hessian music culture, the anniversary summer is a good occasion. A charming gem among the big names of the weekend.

Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park Festival: 25 years at the Edersee

On Sunday July 5, the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park celebrates its 25th anniversary at the pond grounds in Bad Wildungen-Armsfeld. The anniversary nature-park festival brings together interactive stands, activities for all ages and a market with regional specialities, free of charge. The setting is one of the finest natural landscapes in northern Hesse, right at the gates of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage of the ancient beech forests. If you would rather spend the weekend in the green than on the festival mile, here is a family festival with a nature focus. A quiet, summery close to a Sunday at the Edersee, far from the bustle of the big cities.

You will find more events across Germany in our agenda for this weekend. Have a fine summer weekend in Hesse.
