Three days of street festival in the Huguenot town at the foot of the Taunus
The Hugenottenmarkt Friedrichsdorf is one of the most traditional street festivals in the Hochtaunuskreis district. The name refers to the historical identity of the town: Friedrichsdorf was founded in 1687 by French Huguenots who had been expelled from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Homburg granted them asylum and founded the town, which to this day preserves the Huguenot character in its cityscape: regular street grids, neoclassical buildings, and Landgrafenplatz as the center.
In 2026, the market will run from Friday, July 3rd, starting at 4 PM until Sunday, July 5th, at 9 PM. This three-day structure combines an after-work atmosphere on Friday with a classic weekend family festival on Saturday and Sunday. The organizer is the Förderverein Hugo e.V., a volunteer initiative that has been organizing the event for years, playing an important role in the social life of the town.
Programmatically, the Hugenottenmarkt focuses on two stages: the main stage at Landgrafenplatz in the center of the old town and the second stage on the Parkdeck-Rathaus (parking deck-town hall). Bands from various genres alternate on both stages: Soul and Funk bands, Country and Line Dance groups, acoustic singer-songwriter performances, cover bands. The repertoire is deliberately broad and aimed at a multi-generational audience.
A special feature of the Hugenottenmarkt is its diverse show program: Kung Fu demonstrations by a local martial arts school, children's dance performances, the Garde dance of local carnival clubs, giant soap bubble shows, and hands-on activities for children. This wide range of programs makes the festival a family event with substance – not just music and food, but also experience stations for young and old.
The gastronomic variety is above average for a town festival market: burgers, crêpes, vegan options, classic German potato specialties. For drinks, the market stands out with regional wine from Rheingau and Hochtaunus, as well as craft beer from local breweries – a conscious focus on quality. In addition, there are craft stalls with handmade jewelry, soaps, and floristry, as well as advisory services like a dog training stand.
Sunday begins with a church service in the morning – a programmatic choice that honors the town's Huguenot heritage. Afterwards, the Sunday program continues with live music starting at 11 AM, the children's carousel, show performances, and market stalls, which remain open until the festival concludes at 9 PM.
Friedrichsdorf, with its approximately 25,000 inhabitants, is located in the Hochtaunuskreis district at the foot of the Taunus mountains, in close proximity to Bad Homburg and Königstein. The town is known for its historic old town, its Huguenot history, and – not to forget – as the birthplace of zwieback (specifically, Friedrichsdorfer Zwieback). The Hugenottenmarkt is one of the few major annual events that makes the town's identity visible, blending its Huguenot heritage, Taunus location, and character as a residential town.
The 2026 edition sticks to the proven three-day format. The organizer is Förderverein Hugo e.V., which has been organizing the town festival for years with volunteer commitment. Main stage at Landgrafenplatz, second stage at Parkdeck-Rathaus. Details on the 2026 band list will be published on hugo-markt.de and Facebook.
