Neuenkirchen in the Twin Municipality
Neuenkirchen, together with Vörden, forms the twin municipality of Neuenkirchen-Vörden in the Vechta district. Despite the political merger, both districts retain their independent identity, their own clubs, their own parish church, and their own festivals. The Kirmes Neuenkirchen is one of the important identity-forming events of the Neuenkirchen district and should not be confused with the Kirmes of the same name in the Damme district of Neuenkirchen.
Free Beer Opening on Friday
One of the Kirmes' most popular rituals is the tapping of the keg on Friday at 3 p.m.. The mayor or club representatives invite attendees for free beer in the Rathausplatz, which traditionally marks the official start of the three festival days. Afterwards, showmen, carousels, and food stands open for business, and the festival weekend gets underway.
Flea Market at the Weekend
A large flea market at the weekend complements the programme of the actual Kirmes. Private individuals, clubs, and commercial second-hand dealers offer household goods, books, toys, clothing, and collector's items. The flea market is known beyond the district and attracts bargain hunters from all over the region.
Classic Village Fair
As with any village fair in the Oldenburg Münsterland region, the focus is on carousels, shooting galleries, food stands, and club catering. Families find a varied programme during the day, and in the evening, young and old meet in the Rathausplatz or in the surrounding festival tents and restaurants. Admission to the fairground is free.
