Spring open-air cinema on Kurfürstendamm with free admission
The Open Air Cinema at Kranzler Eck is one of the few open-air cinemas in Berlin that opens in spring - most others wait for the real summer season. During the spring window (typically late April to early May), the open-air cinema shows a classic of international or German film history every evening from 8 PM - with free admission, including seating in the open courtyard of Kranzler Eck at Kurfürstendamm 19 / Joachimstaler Straße. The location is legendary: Café Kranzler was the iconic West Berlin café for decades, and the Kranzler high-rise behind it a landmark of the rebuilt Kurfürstendamm of the post-war era.
The 2026 season runs from Friday, April 24, to Sunday, May 3, 2026 - ten evenings of continuous programming. Films start at 8:00 PM each evening, with a different film each night. The 2026 program mixes Hollywood classics ("Dirty Dancing", "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", "Love & Basketball") with successful German films from recent years. In case of rain, the program will be postponed or moved to nearby indoor cinemas - the exact weather rules will be published daily on the organizer's website.
A special feature of the 2026 edition: on Saturday, April 25, a 3x3 basketball tournament titled "We Own the Game - ChaWi goes Basketball" will accompany the season opening - fitting for the 2026 Women's Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Berlin and other German cities. Starting at noon, there will be a 3x3 tournament on a temporary court at Kranzler Eck, wheelchair basketball demonstrations, interactive stations, and a prize wheel. In the evening, the open-air cinema will start with Love & Basketball.
The open-air cinema brings Charlottenburg to life in spring: the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf has a dense program of events during the high summer season, but at the end of April / beginning of May, the city is not yet fully in summer mode. The festival format is therefore welcome - locals from the neighborhood meet tourists from all over the world, families meet film fans. Those who want to watch with a drink from a nearby bar can do so; the seats in the courtyard are free and available without prior registration.
Ten evenings of open-air cinema with free admission in Charlottenburg in spring. Films start at 8 PM each evening, seating in the courtyard, no reservations. In case of rain, the program will be postponed or relocated - current weather updates on berlin.de/kino.
