Three August days when vintners open their historic cellars to visitors
The Open Cellar Days in Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg offer an exceptional format: for three days in August, the winegrowers of the spa town open their mostly historic cellars, carved into the rock, to visitors. Directly between barrels and bottles, current vintage wines are tasted, and the vintners share firsthand stories about vineyard sites, production, and their winemaking philosophy. It's a rare opportunity for an intimate wine experience.
As a district of Bad Kreuznach, Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg is part of the Nahe wine region and also a traditional spa resort with a brine spa. The vineyard sites around the famous Rotenfels and Ebernburg are among Germany's best Riesling terroirs.
The wine cellars of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg are a piece of Nahe region history. Many were carved directly into the colorful sandstone of the Rotenfels area in the 18th and 19th centuries and offer ideal conditions for wine maturation due to their constant temperature and humidity. Wooden barrels, old vats, patina-covered walls, and subdued lighting create an almost sacred atmosphere that makes wine enjoyment a very special experience.
During the Open Cellar Days, participating vintners invite visitors directly into their cellar vaults. Tastings usually take place standing up, among barrels and bottles, in an intimate and immediate atmosphere. The vintners themselves pour the wine, explain the vineyard sites, describe their winery's style, and answer questions. It's a rare chance to experience viticulture up close.
The vineyard sites of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg are small, steep, and full of character. Particularly famous are the sites around the Rotenfels – the highest cliff face north of the Alps – and the slopes below the Ebernburg. Volcanic rock, slate, and colorful sandstone shape the terroir, yielding mineral-elegant Rieslings, powerful Pinot Noirs, and fine Pinot Blancs.
Since 2014, Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg has formally been a district of Bad Kreuznach but has retained its own character. The brine spa, the spa park, the saltworks, and the spectacular backdrop of Rotenfels and Ebernburg make the town a popular spa and excursion destination. Hiking, spa treatments, wine, and history – the Open Cellar Days add another attractive element to this mix.
