Open-Air Cinema in a Lost Place
The Old Police Headquarters at Ludwigstraße 18 is one of Frankfurt's most atmospheric locations: a massive brick building from the 1910s, the former headquarters of the Hessian police, largely unused for years — and thus a true "Lost Place" in the middle of the city. Every year, Freiluftkino Frankfurt moves its summer season into the courtyard of this building. 2026 marks the 13th season.
Film Selection: Mainstream Meets Arthouse
The program is deliberately mixed: current cinema highlights of the ongoing season, arthouse gems, classics, and selected original language screenings. If you want to see a major blockbuster, an independent favorite, and a cult classic from 30 years ago under the open sky in one summer, this is the place to be. The program will be released in weekly intervals.
Atmosphere and Gastronomy
The courtyard can accommodate several hundred guests on folding chairs — loungers are available in limited numbers for an extra charge. The catering is provided by Frankfurt favorites Chez Vivi and Ciccione: burgers, pasta, fresh salads, natural wines, Aperol, Frankfurt beer — not your usual cinema snacks, but real summer evening cuisine. Film start times depend on sunset (typically from 9:30 PM in July, from 9:00 PM in August).
Advance Sales and Ticketing
Advance ticket sales open on June 1st, 2026 — online via the festival website and Kinoheld. For popular films on weekends, it's advisable to book early; individual screenings regularly sell out. In case of bad weather, there are provisions for rescheduling or refunds.
Frankfurt in High Summer
July and August in Frankfurt can be climatically challenging (heatwaves occur), but the summer evenings in the courtyard are often mild — the building acts as a heat accumulator during the day and protects from wind in the evening. Combining the open-air cinema with a stroll along the Main riverbank and a beer in Sachsenhausen offers a classic Frankfurt summer evening.
