Eleven summer days in front of the Alte Oper – Frankfurt's city festival with a classical backdrop
The Opernplatzfest is more than a classic city festival: Against the magnificent backdrop of the Alte Oper, the Opernplatz is transformed into an open-air stage for eleven days, where live music, top gastronomy, and urban flair come together. Founded in 1978 by then-Mayor Walter Wallmann as a thank you to the citizens of Frankfurt, the festival has evolved from the modest Lucae Fountain Festival into one of the Main metropolis's most renowned events.
On the stages around the Opernbrunnen, the program ranges from jazz and blues to pop and classical music, as well as piano concerts. Walk-acts and interactive installations ensure that no stroll across the square is boring. When the facade of the Alte Oper is illuminated in the evening, an almost Mediterranean atmosphere is created in the heart of the banking district.
Stalls from regional and international top restaurants line the Opernplatz: Frankfurt specialties, Alsatian Flammkuchen, Argentinian steak, Spanish paella – accompanied by cocktails from experienced bartenders and regional wines. Those who prefer elegance can reserve a spot in one of the open-air lounges.
The Opernplatz is located in the Westend-Süd district, framed by skyscrapers, upscale restaurants, and the Alte Oper itself. The festival is easily reachable by subway (lines U6/U7, station Alte Oper) from the main train station in just a few minutes – it's best to leave your car at home in Frankfurt's banking district.
The Opernplatzfest is one of those Frankfurt festivals that appeal to all generations: bankers enjoying an after-work drink, families on weekends, tourists looking for atmosphere. Anyone experiencing Frankfurt in the summer should not miss this city center event that lasts for eleven days.
The 2026 edition of the Opernplatzfest runs from Wednesday, June 17th, to Friday, June 26th. On the stages around the Opernbrunnen, acts range from contemporary beats to jazz, classical, and Italo-Folk. Confirmed artists include Zundanz, Roy Hammer & die Pralinées, The Sound Section, and Orquesta Rumbon.
Free admission. Payment at the stalls on-site. Some restaurants offer table reservations.
