Hesse's national drink in its hometown – ten days of apple wine on the Roßmarkt
Anyone who understands Frankfurt understands apple wine. Schoppen is the name for the traditional drinking vessel, Bembel the characteristic jug made of grey-blue stoneware, Geripptes the glass with the diamond-shaped facets that holds the wine even in the greasy goblets of taverns. The Frankfurt Apple Wine Festival brings this Hessian cultural tradition to the Roßmarkt for ten days – one of Frankfurt's central squares, just steps from the Hauptwache and Goethestraße.
From Friday, August 7th, to Sunday, August 16th, 2026, the stalls on the Roßmarkt will be open daily from 11:00 AM until late in the evening. The official opening ceremony usually takes place on the first festival day between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM. Free admission to the entire festival grounds.
The offerings range from traditional apple wine made from old apple varieties, as served in classic Frankfurt apple wine taverns, to creative apple wine mixed drinks – cider cocktails, frizzante variations, apple wine spritzers with elderflower, mixed drinks with aromatic syrups. Those who previously only knew apple wine in its original form will discover its full spectrum here.
In addition to drinking, getting to know the apple wine culture is also a focus: 'Bembel' in various sizes, 'Geripptes' glasses, apple candies, and apple jams are available as souvenirs – ideal for tourists who want to take a piece of Hesse home with them.
The stage program focuses on Hessian humor: Hessian comedy, regional bands, apple wine songs, and dialect acts alternate. Those who know Frankfurt only as an international financial metropolis will get to know the other – the Hessian, witty, ironic – side of the city here.
Like the Museumsuferfest, the Apple Wine Festival is organized by Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt am Main – the city's tourism company that coordinates Frankfurt's most important city festivals.
From Friday, August 7th, to Sunday, August 16th, 2026, the Frankfurt Apple Wine Festival will take place on the Roßmarkt. Free admission.
