One of the largest folk festivals in Central Hesse – Tradition since 1837
In the 19th century, Gladenbach in the Hinterland region of the Lahn Valley was one of the most important cherry-growing areas in the region – and it celebrated the harvest with a market that soon grew beyond purely economic significance. Since 1837, the Kirschenmarkt (Cherry Market) has been the annual highlight of Gladenbach's event calendar and has developed into one of the largest folk festivals in Central Hesse – attracting around 110,000 visitors over four festival days.
In 2026, the Cherry Market will take place from July 2nd to 5th – the town in the Gladenbach Uplands will switch entirely into festival mode. A food street with snacks and stalls, carousels, and fairground rides will stretch through the town center, the large festival tent will be the evening meeting point, alongside a flea market and amusement park. The opening is traditionally on Thursday evening, with the main activities on the weekend.
The highlight of the Cherry Market is the parade on Sunday afternoon: over 50 themed floats, music groups, clubs, and marching bands will parade through the town center. Thousands of visitors will line the route. In the evening, the grand fireworks display will conclude Sunday evening over Gladenbach with light and sound.
The 2026 edition was initially under special observation: disputes between the city council, local representatives, and potential general lessees regarding lease amounts, tent operations, and awarding procedures led to months of discussion. Finally, a new expression of interest procedure was announced, with applicants able to register until December 15, 2025. The City of Gladenbach has officially confirmed the dates of July 2nd to 5th, 2026.
With its 187th edition in 2026, the Cherry Market continues a generational tradition that dates back to the early 19th century. The combination of harvest thanksgiving, market activities, showmen, and club life makes the festival a typical example of Hessian folk festival tradition – with the difference that its scale, with 110,000 visitors, far exceeds the local level.
From Thursday, July 2nd, to Sunday, July 5th, 2026, the 187th Gladenbach Cherry Market will take place. After several months of discussion regarding lease awards, the City of Gladenbach has officially confirmed the folk festival and conducted a new expression of interest procedure for the general lease and tent operations.
Note: Detailed stage program and exhibitors will be published on gladenbach.de after the lease award is finalized.
