A Summer Format with Cult Status
The concert series "Donnerstags in Gladenbach" is one of the loveliest small open-air traditions in Central Hesse. Every Thursday in high summer, the historic Gladenbach Market Square transforms into a stage with a beer garden atmosphere: a cover band or a local act performs, the audience sits at tables, eats, drinks, listens, and dances. A simple format that has worked for years – and turns the town into a weekly meeting point in the summer.
Five Dates, Five Bands
In 2026, five Thursdays are on the program: July 16, July 23, July 30, August 6, and August 13. The bands start their sets at 6 PM each, with the main concert usually running from 7 PM to 10 PM. Programmatically, rock, pop, blues, and Schlager acts alternate – the concept is broad and aimed at an audience from the entire region between Marburg, Biedenkopf, and Wetzlar.
Conceived by the Hotel, Supported by the City
The initiator and conceptual mastermind is the Hotel Zum Treppche, a traditional Gladenbach establishment that has been organizing the concert series independently for years. The operational organizer is SEB Gladenbach GmbH, a municipal company that coordinates catering and logistics. The City of Gladenbach provides the market square and infrastructure. The model is an interesting example of how hotels, municipal operations, and city administration can jointly support a city event.
Festival Mug as a Concept
A special feature: a festival mug is mandatory for drinks (with a deposit). This solution avoids disposable tableware, keeps the market square clean, and gives the format a small identifying click. The concept is environmentally conscious and logistically elegant – and underscores the programmatic line between a city festival and small-scale arts.
Gladenbach – Spa Town in the Hinterland
Gladenbach, with its approximately 12,000 inhabitants, is located in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district on the edge of the Gladenbacher Bergland. The town holds the designation "State-recognized Spa" and is known for its castle, its half-timbered houses, and the rolling hills of the Hessian Hinterland. The market square in the center, framed by half-timbered buildings and the town church, is the natural stage for an open-air event of this scale.
Free Admission – With a Small Restriction
The concert series is generally free, which distinguishes it from many similar summer formats. In previous years, a small admission fee of €5 was sometimes charged for individual concert evenings, with the opening concert remaining free. The exact regulation for 2026 will usually be communicated shortly before the season starts.
