About Hanami Marburg

When the Japanese ornamental cherry trees on Marburg's Stresemannstraße are in full bloom, the street in the southern district transforms into a little piece of Japan for a day. The Hanami Cherry Blossom Festival will celebrate its 3rd edition in 2026 and takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 12 PM to 6 PM. Expect Taiko drumming shows, demonstrations of Japanese martial arts (Kendō, Iaidō, Kyūdō), calligraphy, and street food offerings with sushi, gyoza, and onigiri – a festival that commemorates the donation of the cherry trees by the Japanese Consul General in 1989.

A Piece of Japan in Marburg

The Stresemannstraße in Marburg's Südviertel is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful streets in Hesse – at least in the third week of April. That's when the Japanese ornamental cherry trees, which the then Japanese Consul General Tadao Araki gifted to the city of Marburg in 1989, display their pink carpet of blossoms. The street becomes a cherry blossom avenue, and the district a pilgrimage site for amateur photographers from all over Central Hesse.

Hanami – the Japanese Blossom Festival

Since 2024, the city of Marburg has been celebrating this fleeting moment of the year with its own Hanami festival. Hanami (花見, "blossom viewing") is a centuries-old tradition in Japan: families, friends, and colleagues picnic under the blooming sakura trees, often accompanied by music, games, and small performances. Marburg transfers this custom to the Lahntal valley – with a German-Japanese accent and without picnic blankets, but with a closed-off street.

The 2026 Program – Taiko, Martial Arts, and Calligraphy

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, Stresemannstraße will be closed to traffic from 12 PM to 6 PM. On the action area under the cherry trees, Taiko drumming shows are planned, along with demonstrations of classic Japanese martial arts: Kendō (sword fighting with a bamboo sword), Iaidō (the art of drawing the sword), and the traditional archery sport Kyūdō. Calligraphy workshops, Japanese street food stalls offering sushi, gyoza, and onigiri, as well as Western alternatives, complete the program.

3rd Edition and Already a Tradition

What began as a small neighborhood festival in 2024 has become a firm fixture in Marburg's spring calendar within three years. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Marburg, which coordinates the festival in collaboration with local Japanophile associations and schools.

Hanami Marburg — edition 2026

3rd Hanami Cherry Blossom Festival in Marburg's Stresemannstraße. Six hours of Japanese culture under the blooming sakura: Taiko drumming, Kendō, Iaidō, Kyūdō, and calligraphy, plus sushi, gyoza, onigiri, and a closed-street festival in the southern district.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, Stresemannstraße in Marburg's Südviertel will become the stage for the third Hanami festival. From 12 PM to 6 PM, the street will be traffic-free – space for Taiko drummers, martial arts demonstrations, calligraphy workshops, and Japanese street food under the blooming cherry trees.
