Four weeks of genre festival at Auedamm – since 1986 Kassel's musical summer living room
Kulturzelt Kassel has been the city's musical summer constant since 1986. What began as a small tent festival at Auedamm has developed into one of the most distinguished cross-genre festivals in central Germany – with a profile clearly distinct from large commercial festivals: smaller, curated, with a focus on acoustic quality and artist proximity.
The venue is the tent at Auedamm 2, directly at the Drahtbrücke over the Fulda, on the edge of Karlsaue. One of North Germany's most beautiful park areas is right on its doorstep. The capacity is around 650 spectators per concert – small enough for a club atmosphere, large enough to attract international acts.
The season June 12 – July 11, 2026 brings around 30 concerts over four weeks. The stylistic spectrum is deliberately broad: Indie and Singer-Songwriter, Folk and Irish Folk, Electronic and Ambient, Blues and Soul, Hip-Hop and Rap, theater concerts, and classical music. Confirmed acts for 2026 include Apparat, Martin Kohlstedt, The High Kings (Irish Folk), Christone „Kingfish“ Ingram (Blues), Dominique Fils-Aimé (Soul), Cari Cari, OK.Danke.Tschüss, Torch, and Morlockk Dilemma (Rap), plus a children's program with Herr Jan und seine Superbänd. Several concerts are already sold out – including MINE, Les Yeux d'la Tête, and Sleaford Mods.
Unlike classic summer festivals, each concert takes place on its own evening – no stage hopping, no festival wristband for the whole week. Those with a ticket for Apparat come for Apparat, sit within 650 seats close to the action, and experience a complete concert. The format attracts an older, music-savvy audience but is also consciously open to younger people and families (own children's program).
Kassel, with just under 200,000 inhabitants, is the third-largest city in Hesse and internationally known as the documenta city – the festival benefits from this cultural infrastructure. The Karlsaue, the site of the documenta's outdoor areas, is located directly next to the tent. Kassel's entire summer image (park, Fulda river, documenta atmosphere) helps Kulturzelt position itself regionally.
