About Industrial Culture Festival

In late summer 2026, the Berlin Industrial Culture Festival will open the doors of over 30 industrial sites in Berlin for three weeks — from preserved factory halls and disused railway stations to 'lost places' on the outskirts. The festival combines guided tours, concerts in unusual spaces, photo walks, industrial rallies, silent discos, and culinary experiences against an industrial backdrop. The organizer is the Berliner Zentrum Industriekultur (bzi). The 2026 edition runs from September 12 to October 4, opening on the Day of the Open Monument.

Berlin as an Industrial City—Rediscovered

For decades, Berlin stood as one of Europe's greatest industrial powerhouses: AEG, Siemens, Borsig, and Knorr-Bremse—names that defined entire neighborhoods. Today, this history is scattered across repurposed residential areas, decaying sites, and creative hubs. The Berlin Industriekultur Festival, organized by the Berliner Zentrum Industriekultur (bzi), brings these hidden traces to life for three weeks each year. It is a festival without a single venue, wandering across the city and opening new doors every weekend.

September 12 to October 4, 2026

The 2026 edition runs from September 12 to October 4, spanning three weeks and four weekends. The opening on September 12 is intentionally aligned with the nationwide Tag des offenen Denkmals (Open Monument Day). Since many festival sites are already open to the public on this day, the festival uses this momentum to shine a spotlight on Berlin's industrial monuments.

Over 50 locations, twelve districts

More than 50 partner sites and hidden gems across Berlin are participating in the program, with the 2026 edition featuring over 100 events across twelve districts. A key focus is the Industriesalon Schöneweide on the former AEG grounds in Niederschöneweide, one of Berlin's largest contiguous industrial heritage sites. However, the program also spans from the old Borsig works in Tegel and the Schultheiss brewery in Spandau to the Umspannwerk Markgrafendamm in Friedrichshain and the Knorr-Bremse works in Marzahn—connecting almost every district from Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf to Treptow-Köpenick.

Silent Disco at Naturpark Südgelände, theater at the substation

The program is intentionally diverse and experimental: silent discos in extraordinary settings, historic transport rallies featuring vintage trams and buses, improvisational theater centered on industrial history, exclusive guided tours with insider access, photo walks through abandoned industrial buildings, and culinary evenings set against industrial backdrops. These are complemented by lectures, readings, and workshops led by Berlin experts in architecture, economics, and social history.

Supported by the State of Berlin

The festival is a collaborative project between the Berliner Zentrum Industriekultur (bzi) and a network of industrial heritage sites and hidden gems. It is supported by the Berlin Senate Department, the State Monument Office of Berlin, visitBerlin, and the economic development agencies of several Berlin districts. Initiatives, cultural centers, and educational institutions wishing to contribute to the industrial heritage narrative can register their own events. This makes the festival an open, evolving format, deeply embedded in the 19th and 20th-century industrial history of the state of Berlin.
