Open-air wine festival on the Katschhof between the Cathedral and City Hall — June 25th to 28th, 2026 with around 20 vintners from Rheinland-Pfalz
Anyone looking for a special place in Aachen in the summer for a glass of Riesling, a Spätburgunder, or a sparkling wine should head to the Katschhof — the large square between Aachen Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage since 1978) and the historic City Hall. For four days in June 2026, this square transforms into an open-air wine festival: the WeinSommer Aachen, organized by WeinFreund Aachen, the renowned local wine specialist shop.
From Thursday, June 25th to Sunday, June 28th, 2026, around 20 vintners from Rheinland-Pfalz will present their wines directly at their stands. Mosel, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Nahe, Ahr — the most important German wine-growing regions are all represented. You walk from stand to stand, taste, get explanations about the vineyard and vintage, and buy bottles to take home. The opposite of a mass folk festival (Volksfest): concentrated, wine-focused, with atmosphere.
The WeinSommer traditionally took place in August. For the 2026 edition, the festival has been moved to June as an exception: In August 2026, Aachen will host the FEI World Equestrian Games (Reit-WM 2026), a major international event that occupies the Katschhof and large parts of the city center. WeinFreund Aachen has therefore moved the festival forward — a pragmatic, well-communicated adjustment to the city's major event schedule.
The festival runs over the four days with different times:
Sunday deliberately ends early — a weekend wind-down, not a late-night marathon.
In the evenings, there will be musical accompaniment — usually live music in the style of jazz, acoustic, or light classical, fitting the wine ambiance. No bass-heavy stage, no DJ sets. The atmosphere is refined, with high tables and seating around the wine stands. In the background, the illuminated facade of the Cathedral at night — a backdrop that is rarely so easily accessible.
The organizer is WeinFreund Aachen, the local wine specialist shop that has been shaping the city's cultural wine scene for years. In addition to WeinSommer, WeinFreund regularly organizes wine tastings, sommelier evenings, and thematic wine events. At WeinSommer, WeinFreund operates its own stand with a selection of its wines — wines not available at all vintner stands, and an opportunity for regular customers to taste them on-site.
The Katschhof is the central square of Aachen's Old Town. Bounded to the north by the Cathedral (coronation site of German kings until 1531) and to the south by the City Hall (on the site of Charlemagne's imperial palace) — the square is an urban gem. Today, it's a place for recreation, a market area, and an event venue. WeinSommer consistently leverages this location: you sit with your glass of Riesling under the Carolingian heritage.
Four days of wine festival between the Cathedral and City Hall. Around 20 vintner stands on the Katschhof, patio heaters and bistro tables if needed, musical accompaniment in the evening. The program highlight is the diversity: you can taste Mosel Riesling alongside Palatinate Spätburgunder, Rheinhessen sparkling wine next to Nahe Riesling. WeinFreund Aachen curates the exhibitor program.
The 2026 edition will not take place in August as usual, but in June. Reason: Aachen will host the FEI World Equestrian Games (Reit-WM) in 2026, which will use the Katschhof as a venue in August. WeinSommer has therefore been moved forward by almost two months — a logistical adjustment that is expected to return to the August date from 2027 onwards.
The specific list of vintners and live music acts will be communicated in advance on weinfreund-aachen.de.
Free admission. Wines per glass at usual tasting prices, whole bottles with direct sales discount at the stand. Glass deposit varies by exhibitor (usually €2-5). Food available at snack stands.
By train: Aachen Hauptbahnhof (main station), then a 10-minute walk or bus 25/35 to the Elisenbrunnen stop. By car: A 4 / A 44 towards Aachen, then park in the garages at Hauptbahnhof, Innenstadt (city center), or Klinikum. Parking in the city center is subject to charge.
Free admission. Wines at the stands are subject to charge (usual tasting prices per glass; whole bottles with a discount).
Thu, June 25th and Fri, June 26th: 4 PM–12 AM. Sat, June 27th: 2 PM–12 AM. Sun, June 28th: 12 PM–8 PM.
Thursday evening is the quietest day — ideal if you want to talk to the vintners in peace. Saturday and Friday evenings are significantly busier. If you bring your own wine glass, you'll keep track of your tasting — the stands usually serve in their own glasses, often with a deposit.
