Traditional Zoigl beer festival on the Anger – Mitterteich's summer highlight
Mitterteich is a town of around 6,500 inhabitants in the Tirschenreuth district in northeastern Upper Palatinate – near the Czech border. The region is famous for its Zoigl beer tradition: a form of communal brewing practiced since the Middle Ages, where citizens brew beer in a shared brewery, which is then served in private homes ("Zoiglstuben"). Mitterteich, Windischeschenbach, Neuhaus, Falkenberg, and Eslarn are the five official Zoigl towns with active communal breweries. The Zoiglfest in Mitterteich honors this brewing tradition in a special way.
The festival is organized by the Burschenverein Concordia Mitterteich – a traditional men's club, typical for Upper Palatinate and Bavaria. Youth clubs preserve customs, organize village and town festivals, and the Zoiglfest is their most important own event. Catering is entirely managed by the club – on a voluntary basis.
For years, the venue has been the Anger, a central square in Mitterteich, which is used for the festival with a marquee, bars, and seating. In the neighboring Bauer-Haus, a cake buffet is offered concurrently – homemade cakes baked by girlfriends, wives, and mothers of the club members. In 2025, 25 cakes and pastries were served there, along with around 150 pieces of baked goods.
The festival program has followed a well-established schedule for years:
The Zoiglfest in Mitterteich is one of several Zoigl summer festivals in the region. These events complement the year-round Zoigl-Stuben tradition and offer visitors from outside the region an accessible entry point to the regional beer culture. Anyone traveling through Tirschenreuth, Windischeschenbach, or Mitterteich in the summer should plan to attend a Zoiglfest.
While 2025 marked the festival's anniversary (20th edition), in 2026 the Concordia youth club will continue the established tradition. The date, bands, and exact program are traditionally announced a few weeks before the festival through local press and club channels.
By car via the A93 (Mitterteich exit) or from Bayreuth via the B299. The A93 makes Mitterteich easily accessible from Regensburg and the Czech Republic. By train: Mitterteich station on the Marktredwitz–Wiesau line, about a 10-minute walk to the Anger from there.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and the cake buffet are purchased on-site.
