About Kuckuckskerwe

The Kuckuckskerwe Enkenbach is the traditional Kerwe (church consecration festival) of the Enkenbach district in the Verbandsgemeinde Enkenbach-Alsenborn. Its unusual name refers to the cuckoo – a familiar element of the Palatinate forest and meadow landscape, which has gained symbolic meaning in Enkenbach. On the 2nd Sunday in July 2026, the village celebrates its Kerwe with a fixed program: Open-air concert on Friday with the band Fused, barrel tapping on Saturday at 7 PM, ecumenical tent service on Sunday morning, Kerweredd at 3 PM, and a colorful parade. The organizer is the Karneval-Verein Enkenbach (KVK) with the local clubs.

The Kuckuckskerwe Enkenbach is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Enkenbach district in the Verbandsgemeinde Enkenbach-Alsenborn in the Kaiserslautern district. On July 12, 2026, the village will celebrate its Kerwe on the 2nd Sunday in July – a traditional date in the Palatinate Kerwe calendar. The organizer is the Karneval-Verein Enkenbach (KVK) in cooperation with the local clubs.

Cuckoo as a Symbol

The name Kuckuckskerwe is one of those typical Palatinate Kerwe labels that play with wit and local relevance. The cuckoo is a familiar bird in the Palatinate forest and meadow landscape; in Enkenbach, it has developed a special local symbolism and gives the Kerwe its name. The Palatinate wordplay with animals and puns is an essential element of the festival culture.

Open-Air Concert on Friday

The Kerwe kicks off with an open-air concert on Friday evening. The Palatinate band Fused has regularly performed on the opening night in previous years – with a mix of cover hits, rock, and pop that appeals to a broad audience. The festival grounds open in the early evening, and the concert begins after dark.

Barrel Tapping on Saturday

On Saturday at 7 PM, the traditional Fassanstich (barrel tapping) takes place. The club board or a guest of honor officially opens the Kerwe. This is followed by a dance evening with live music or a DJ, Palatinate food and drinks, and the Kerwestrauß (Kerwe bouquet) tradition.

Ecumenical Tent Service on Sunday

Sunday begins with an ecumenical tent service on the festival grounds. Pastors from the Catholic and Protestant communities jointly lead the service – a sign of lived ecumenism and close village community. This is followed by a Frühschoppen (morning pint) with brass music.

Kerweredd at 3 PM

The highlight of Sunday afternoon is the Kerweredd at 3 PM – the humorous and satirical Kerwe speech by the Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor), which addresses village events, local anecdotes, and political events of the year. The colorful Kerweumzug (Kerwe parade) complements the Sunday program.
