Zoigl – Living Brewing Tradition
Zoigl is a specialty of the northern Oberpfalz (Bavaria) and one of Europe's oldest still-practiced brewing traditions. "Zoigl" derives from "Zeiglein" – the six-pointed Zoigl star (brewer's star), which indicates at the front door that fresh Zoigl is being served. The beer is brewed communally in the Kommunbrauhaus, then fermented and stored in the private cellars of the Zoigl brewers.
Mitterteich – A Zoigl Stronghold
Mitterteich in the Tirschenreuth district is one of the five true Oberpfalz Zoigl towns with a Kommunbrauhaus (alongside Eslarn, Falkenberg, Neuhaus, and Windischeschenbach). The town's Zoiglstuben serve in rotation according to a fixed calendar, ensuring that Zoigl is available almost year-round. The Zoiglstube Lugert "Boozhaus" at Bachgasse 12 is one of the traditional establishments.
Naturally Cloudy, Unfiltered, Honest
Zoigl beer is an unfiltered, naturally cloudy cellar beer with a strong, full-bodied character – each brew is unique. Hearty Oberpfalz snacks are served alongside in the Zoiglstube. The atmosphere is rustic and convivial: locals and guests sit together at long tables, often striking up conversations quickly. A visit to a Zoigl is less a pub visit and more a cultural experience.
Atmosphere
Anyone wanting to experience Zoigl immerses themselves in a piece of living Oberpfalz tradition. The limited serving days make every visit a small event – you go when the star is hanging. This very irregularity, combined with the authenticity of the beer and the pub, creates its special charm.
