Culinary village festival all about the Knödel in the Düren district of Wallerfangen
Saarland has plenty of town festivals, folk festivals, wine festivals, and carnival parades. But a festival dedicated solely to one culinary classic? That's what you'll find in the Düren district of Wallerfangen. The Düren Knödel Festival makes the humble Knödel – the classic accompaniment to Saarland and Southern German Sunday roasts – the star of an entire festival day.
A reminder for those from out of town: Knödel are boiled or steamed dumplings made from potatoes, stale bread, quark, or bread rolls. In Saarland, they are traditionally served with Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), game dishes, or cream sauces – and in sweet versions (quark, apricot, curd cheese dumplings) as a main course or dessert. At the Dürener Knödelfest, they are available in all conceivable variations.
The Düren village community organizes the festival. At the stands of the participating associations – the music club, sports club, fire department, women's choir, men's choir, church community – various Knödel dishes are offered concurrently: potato dumplings with Schwenker and cream sauce, bread dumplings with mushroom ragout, quark dumplings with plum jam, apricot dumplings, filled dumplings with bacon and onions. Anyone wanting to try them all would need an entire afternoon.
The Düren district of Wallerfangen has around 850 inhabitants and is located between the Saar river and the French border, in one of Saarland's richest cultural landscapes. The village community maintains an active club life – the Knödel Festival is its culinary flagship and attracts visitors from the entire Saarlouis district and the adjacent Lorraine region.
In addition to the culinary focus, the day is characterized by live music (from the music club, acoustic combos), children's programs, and the typical Saarland village festival camaraderie. Residents and guests gather at beer tables in the central festival area or the village center – a classic Saarland summer festival with a special culinary twist.
