Atmospheric Advent market in the historic Lothringian farmhouses
Haus Saargau in Gisingen – a district of the municipality of Wallerfangen in the Saarlouis district – is one of the most valuable local history museums in Saarland. Three restored Lothringian farmhouses show rural living, working, and economic life in the Saarland-Lorraine border region in the 19th century. Once a year, on the first Sunday of Advent, the old walls open for a particularly atmospheric Advent market.
The market is deliberately small and curated: instead of a large marquee, around 15 selected exhibitors are spread across the three courtyards and the garden. You will find ceramics from Saarland workshops, felt art, handmade jewelry, carved wooden works, Ardennes ham, cheese, homemade liqueurs, jams, and Advent wreaths. Unlike large Christmas markets, the atmosphere is intimate – each exhibitor has time for a longer conversation.
A fairy tale reading is prepared for children in the historic parlor, and in the afternoon, St. Nicholas visits the young guests and distributes gifts. The musical finale from 4:30 PM onwards is a small concert by the St. Barbara music club – a typical Saarland club that rounds off the Advent atmosphere with brass music and Christmas carols.
The Saargau – the rolling hills between the Saar and Moselle rivers – is one of the characteristic cultural landscapes of the northern Saarlouis district. Gisingen, Tettingen-Butzdorf, Faha, and the other villages around Wallerfangen proudly maintain their Lorraine-Saarland identity. The Advent market at Haus Saargau is an authentic piece of this local culture.
Those traveling with children can combine the market visit with a walk through wintery Gisingen or a detour to Wallerfangen Castle or the nearby Saarschleifenland. The café at Haus Saargau offers homemade cake and hot apple punch – perfect after visiting the market.
